Big Plays Propel Mifflin County Past Central Mountain in Season Opener

Big plays were the key to success as the Mifflin County Huskies took down the Central Mountain Wildcats 28-19 in the season opener.
In the first quarter, turnovers plagued both teams. The opening Wildcat drive ended with quarterback Kyle Everett fumbling, with the Huskies recovering at the 37-yard line. The Huskies then faced fourth down in their own end, where Wildcat Tanner McCall got the sack, forcing a turnover on downs. The first quarter ended tied 0-0.
To open the second quarter, Everett rushed for a 24-yard gain down to the 2-yard line. On the next play, Kole Corman punched it in, but the extra point was blocked. The Wildcats led 6-0 with 11:37 to go in the second quarter.
The Huskies looked to answer and were driving against the Wildcats’ defense. On fourth and goal, Huskies quarterback Noah Wolfkiel hit Landon Bowen near the goal line, but he was stuffed by the Wildcats’ defense. Two plays later, another fumble gave the Huskies the ball at the 13-yard line. Wolfkiel hit Lucas Hartung for a 13-yard touchdown on the very next play to give the Huskies a 7-6 lead with 6:56 to go in the second quarter.
Later in the second quarter, the Wildcats faced a fourth and long in their own end. Everett took off on the punt and was stopped short of the first down. The Huskies took advantage as Jaxon Strohecker rushed in from 3 yards out, giving the Huskies a 14-6 lead going into halftime.
To open the second half, the Huskies used big plays to their advantage. Wolfkiel found Bowen for a 75-yard strike, but a holding penalty brought the ball back. Just a few plays later, Wolfkiel found receiver Asher Pearce for an 81-yard touchdown. The Huskies led 21-6.

The Wildcats answered later in the third quarter as Everett took a quarterback keeper 55 yards to the house. The score brought the Wildcats within eight. However, the Wildcats didn’t have much time to celebrate, as Bowen took the ensuing kickoff 80-plus yards to the house.

“We talked to our kids all the time about special teams; we blocked an extra point, we thought we could, and we ran a kickoff back,” Huskies head coach Shane Breon said.
The Wildcats scored once more in the opener, as Cramer punched it in from 2 yards out with 8:04 left in the game.
“That was a hard-fought game; we knew it was going to be. They have some tough kids out there. They hit the weights in the offseason, and they scored first. We were able to get a nice kickoff return and come right back, but it was a dogfight,” Breon said.
Mifflin County exits Week 1 with a win and is set to travel to Shippensburg for Week 2. Central Mountain will look to bounce back as it travels to Warrior Run for Week 2.
