The Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders advanced to the 1A District 6 Championship with a dominating 49-7 victory over Claysburg-Kimmel. The Marauders did everything right including seven offensive touchdowns and four defensive turnovers.
Bishop Guilfoyle jumped out to a 28-0 lead after a strong first quarter. Hamilton Gates scored three rushing touchdowns in the first and Chase Kissell connected with Braden Reilly for the other score. Gates also had an early interception, which gave the Marauders all the momentum in the game.
In the second quarter, Kissell would throw another two touchdowns to Reilly and Taurean Consiglio. This allowed Bishop Guilfoyle to enter halftime with a 42-0 lead.
After the half, Tyson Lestochi got the Marauders another interception, which led for Kissell and Reilly’s third touchdown connection. This was the last of the starters for Bishop Guilfoyle who left in the third with a 49-0 lead. Claysburg would score their lone touchdown later in the third on a run from Mason Campagna, which led to the final score of 49-7.
“It’s a different level,” Claysburg Coach Chuck Kassick said. “They’ve got kids that are great at all places. They’re big, athletic, and well coached. When you have a team that’s from a small community playing against a team that’s not, its a different level of football, it just is.”
Kissell finished the night with 203 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. Reilly finished with four catches for 107 yards. Gates had 122 total yards and three rushing touchdowns.
“To win in November and December you’ve gotta be able to run the football,” Bishop Guilfoyle Coach Justin Wheeler said. “We wanted to establish the run. We know we can throw the ball, but we have to make sure our run game is clicking and I thought we really did that. Claysburg has some athletes and they have some kids that all week long we had to prepare for. I thought defensively we were really able to contain them in that first half. We’ve gotta keep riding this momentum into the championship week.”
