The Blue Mountain Eagles defeated the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes by a score of 19-14 as both teams opened up their 2024 seasons. Scoring from either side did not occur until the second half of play, with Blue Mountain scoring by Hunter Blankenhorn, Gaige Guers, and Brady Strause.
While the Hurricanes moved the ball upfield with pass completions from Brayden Fasnacht to Niko Castillo and a fumble recovery by Triston Davis, they could not reach the end zone in the first half. The Eagles were also on the move, but the Hurricanes showed defensive strength through the first 24 minutes of play.
Blue Mountain’s Tyler Stahley was able to kickstart the Eagles with a 53-yard run to put his team in scoring position. Hunter Blankenhorn finished off the drive with a 9-yard touchdown. The Hurricanes fought back defensively to keep the game knotted at six with an interception and touchdown from Niko Carestia. To end the third quarter, receiver Gaige Guers caught a deep pass from his quarterback Brady Strause to put the Eagles up 13-6
Sophomore running back Colton Reber put his team back on top at the start of the fourth quarter with a 23-yard score and a successful two-point conversion. Unfortunately, this proved to not be enough for the Hurricanes, with Blue Mountain’s Strause scoring from 1-yard out to reclaim the lead. The Eagles’ defense held off the Hurricanes for the final six minutes of the game, securing their first win of the season.
Blue Mountain Head Coach Tom Gallagher and his Eagles will face Jim Thorpe next Friday, while Mike Farr and his Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes will take on Panther Valley.
