Jersey Shore’s Stifling Defense Wreaked Havoc in Ending Central Catholic’s Title Run.

ALLENTOWN- Prior to the PIAA State 4A football game Friday night at J. Birney Crum Statdium. The Allentown Central Catholic’s girl’s soccer team was recognized for winning the state championship earlier in the day in Hershey, in come-from-behind fashion 2-1 over Avonworth. It was the schools the third state gold medal in eight months, joining the boys basketball and lacrosse championship.

Unfortunately, for the Vikings football team those accomplishments did not help against the staunch defense of the Jersey Shore Bulldogs, the second ranked 4A team in the state per pafootballnews.com, as the Bulldogs advance to the state quarterfinals by a 20-7 decision on a frigid night in Allentown.

The Vikings were held to just 160 yards of total offense, 53 rushing and 107 passing, but they did have a 7-3 lead at intermission. Breck Miller nailed a 37 yard field goal on the Bulldogs second drive of the game for a 3-0 lead completing a fifty yard drive four minutes into the contest.

With time running out in the half, the Vikings took the lead on a Caiden Shaffer six yard run on a fourth down play, as he took the direct snap and carried several Jersey Shore tacklers into the end zone, capping off a 11 play 60 yard drive with just 39 seconds left. Luke Myers tacked on the point after for the 7-3 lead.

The second half belonged to the Bulldogs defense and running back Hayden Packer. Packer picked up 130 of the teams 150 yards rushing in the game on 21 carries and had one score. With Shaffer out for a time for Central Catholic finished the night with just 65 yards on 26 carries.

Quarterback Brady Jordan put the Bulldogs in the lead for good with a three yard run on their first possession in the third quarter capping off a 39 yard drive, with Miller converting the PAT made it 10-7.

Miller then connected on a 21 yard field goal with 2:11 left in the third quarter as the Bulldogs forced a Viking fumble inside the Central Catholic five yard line, but could only convert the chance to three points making the score 13-7.

Packer busted loose on a 37 yard run midway through the final quarter to put the ball at the one yard line. He would score on the next play to put the game virtually out of reach at 20-7.

Jersey Shore(13-0) will either play District 10 champion Meadville or District 6 champ Juniata as those two teams will play Saturday afternoon. The quarterfinals will take place next weekend at site and times to be announced.

Jersey Shore coach Tom Gavrish had this to say about the win last night.
