The Cambria Heights Highlanders advance to the 2A District 6 Championship after a big 15-8 win over the Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils. It was a defensive battle all game long. Cambria Heights fumbled three times in the second half while both teams combined for eight punts.
“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves,” Cambria Heights Coach Jarrod Lewis said. “I’m proud of our efforts tonight and our defense played tough. We made a mistake down by the goal line, but overall we played a physical game. I’m proud of my guys.”
Cambria Heights got on the board first with two points after Bellwood snapped a ball into the end zone for a safety. That next drive, the Highlanders drove down the field from an impressive, acrobatic catch by Trey Trybus for 31 yards before Stephen Nelen ran it in from 10 yards out. That allowed Cambria Heights to go into halftime with an 8-0 lead.
Right after the half, the Highlanders would score again on a one yard run from Marshall Eckenrode. Bellwood quickly responded with a strong drive, capped off with a touchdown pass from Holden Schreier to Ethan Shawley. Then the Blue Devils got the two point conversion on a throw from Schreier to Cayden Pellegrine to shorten the Highlanders lead to 15-8.
For the next three sets for each team ended the exact same. Cambria Heights fumbled three drives in a row, giving Bellwood the ball, but the Blue Devils failed to move the ball on every chance after a turnover. This eventually led to the end of the game, resulting in a big victory for Cambria Heights.
“Our goal was to play for a district championship and we didn’t reach that goal,” Bellwood Coach Nick Lovrich said. “As we look back on the season, we’ll probably feel a little better about it, but right now it hurts because we wanted to be playing next weekend.”
Cambria Heights will face off against Richland next week in the 2A District 6 Championship.
