Warrington—The number one-ranked Titans remain undefeated, as they downed eight-seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh 35-0 behind a dominant defensive performance. The Titans earned a semifinal date with conference foe and the fourth-seeded Knights of North Penn next Friday night.  We could point to special teams as the turning point in this game, and it very well may have been. But I think there was more to the Titan’s performance than just special teams. I will say this: About four minutes before the half, head coach Tom Hetrick and company reached into their proverbial bag and pulled out some magic. Junior Cade Crim, the team’s punter and backup quarterback, lined up on fourth and ten for what seemed to be a punt, unbeknownst to the defense and most of the stadium, he completed a pass into the flat that landed in the open arms of sophomore running back Braylen Cape who raced untouched 60-yards to paydirt. The play seemed to pull the Titans out of a slump and allowed them to continue their dominance.  “We have faith in our defense. If for some reason that play doesn’t hit, our defense has been playing very good football all year,” Hetrick replied. “We took our chances. Nobody is thinking you’re going to do that when there are ten yards to go. Cade Crim has a lot of moxie. He got the ball to Braylen Cape, who has been making plays for us all year.”

After exchanging series with the Colonials in the first quarter, The Titans took the early lead when senior quarterback Owen Pinkerton carried the ball over the goal line from twenty yards out. The PAT made it 7-0 with 5:18 left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, PW went for it deep in Titan Territory, only to turn the ball over on downs. A few plays later brought us to our above punting scenario. The touchdown and PAT made the score 14-0. PW did get the ball back right before the half, but the Titan defense and senior defensive end Eddie Bowen put a stop to that after sacking PW to run out the clock. Bowen was his usual dominant self and showed why he earned SOL First Team honors during the regular season.

Our second half of football got underway, and Central Bucks South capitalized minutes in when senior Captain and All-League linebacker Jim Wade, who was filling in for injured Kaden Kube, barreled his way through the line for an eight-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 with 9:49 left in the third.

South’s potent defense clamped down harder on the Colonials and forced another turnover on downs. On the very next play, sophomore Braylen Cape fumbled the ball, and there was life back into the Colonials. The Titan’s defense did allow the Colonials some movement, but they couldn’t muster anything and turned the ball over deep in their own territory. A few plays later, Pinkerton called his own number again and took the keeper in from seven yards out. The PAT was missed but the Titan lead grew to 27-0 with 5:21 left to go in the quarter.

The quarter would end, and we would head to the final quarter of play with the Titans having a commanding lead. With about 9 minutes left on the clock, the Titans punched the rock in one more time. This time it was Braylen Cape on the ground from six yards out. Matt Harmon executed a beautiful end-around reverse to score the point conversion and take a 35-0 lead. The mercy rule went into effect, and we had a running clock the rest of the way. PW did get one more chance to try to score but that was ended when senior defensive back Dallon Smith picked off PW’s Caiden Leszczynski to seal the game. The Titans would run out the remainder of the clock and secure their next matchup against the number fourth-seeded North Penn Knights next Friday in the district semifinals.

What’s next: Plymouth Whitemarsh’s season comes to an end after finishing 9-3 overall.  Central Bucks South will host conference foe and rival North Penn (10-2, 5-2) in the semifinals who is the number three seed in the district. The last time these two faced off, South walked away victorious 14-6.

** Eddie Bowen was my second star of the game. The All-League defensive end had two sacks in the game and had some nice blocks on the offensive side of the ball

*** Nick Micewski the First Team All-League tackle and defensive linemen was disruptive all evening and had multiple tackles for loss and a handful of plays. On the offensive side of the ball, Nick and his linemen paved the way for 289 rushing yards.
