MIDDLEBURG – Central Columbia scored on their first drive of the game against Midd-West and never looked back. The Blue Jays rode a two-touchdown night by running back Ty Regan to a 41-0 win over the Mustangs on Friday night.
The Blue Jay defense forced Midd-West to a three-and-out on their first two possessions. Quarterback Mason Fultz was sacked three times within that span. Central Columbia’s first offensive possession started just past the midfield stripe, and after a drive that spanned just over four minutes, a 9-yard touchdown pass from Parker Day to Aidan Huntington put the Blue Jays in front 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, the Mustangs found themselves deep in Blue Jay territory after a fumble recovery. The Mustangs made it down to the three-yard line; however, the drive stalled on fourth down as a pass by quarterback Fultz was batted down at the line of scrimmage by Cordell Heggenstaller.
Central Columbia took over on offense and wasted no time marching down the field, capping the drive off with a 4-yard touchdown run by Ty Regan.
Four minutes later, the Blue Jay offense struck again as Ty Regan ran twenty yards for his second touchdown of the night, followed by a missed extra point, making the score 20-0 with 4:10 left in the half.
In the final seconds of the half, quarterback Parker Day scrambled fifteen yards into the end zone, and with the successful two-point conversion, the Blue Jays took a 28-0 lead into halftime.
“The biggest problem we had in the first half was penalties; it seemed like for almost every chunk play we had, there was a penalty to offset it,” coach E.J Smith said at halftime.
The second half was more of the same for Central Columbia. After both teams exchanged punts to start the third quarter, Aidan Huntington finished off the drive with his second touchdown of the night, making it 35-0. In the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays sealed the deal with a touchdown run by freshman running back Logan Robbins, capping off a 41-0 victory.
“We wanted to control the line of scrimmage, run the ball, and stay ahead of the chains. Besides the penalties that really put us behind, I think we did that.” Coach E.J. Smith stated that running the ball is a big part of the Blue Jays offensive game plan, which worked very well for them during the game. “Our running backs hit it hard, our line did a great job. When you control the line of scrimmage, it makes things a little bit easier,” Smith added when asked about executing the offensive game plan.
Central Columbia’s (1-0) next game is a road game against Mount Carmel (0-1) — the date and time for the game is August 30th at 7:00 p.m.
