Dallas wins District 2 4A Championship

With the District Championship on the line, trailing by four points in the fourth quarter, the Dallas Mountaineers key players came up big. Brady Zapoticky got a big completion to Nick Farrell on fourth down. Dylan Geskey scored his third touchdown of the night to give the Mountaineers the lead and Gavin Lewis snuffed out Valley View’s last chance with an interception as Dallas took the 4A District 2 Championship 21-18. “Hats off to these kids, these are the best in the world. We have an unbelievable community. This just means so much.” said Dallas head coach Rich Mannello. Geskey on the District Championship. “It’s huge, it’s been our goal all year and we finally reached it.”

The Mountaineers started with the ball and drove down the field ending with Dylan Geskey scoring from two yards out for a 7-0 lead with 8:58 remaining in the first quarter. The first Valley View drive ended with a punt. Dallas took over and looked like they were about to score. The Cougars defense faced a fourth and goal at the 3 yard line and stopped the Mountaineers short of the end zone and took over at the one yard line. On the first play after the turnover on downs. Domenic Memo found a wide open Kyle Rupp who ran in for a 99 yard touchdown. Valley View missed the extra point and Dallas maintained a 7-6 lead with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mountaineers got the ball looking to increase their lead. As the first quarter was about to end, Brady Zapoticky found Zach Paczewski for a 39 yard completion for a first and goal at the seven yard. On third and goal, Geskey scored his second touchdown of the game with a one yard touchdown and a 14-6 Dallas lead with 11:03 remaining in the second quarter.

After a turnover on downs by the Cougars and a three and out by the Mountaineers, Valley View got the ball back with great field position. Memo had two big third down conversions. Memo went to Rupp for six on a third and four, then found Christopher Savkov for a 25 yard completion on a third and 9. The drive ended with Preston Reed scoring from two yards out. However, the two point conversion was batted away and Dallas held a 14-12 lead with 2:37 remaining in the first half.

After the Cougars forced a three and out, Valley View started in Dallas territory at the 49. First play, Memo went to Reed for 16 yards. The Cougars got to the Mountaineer 37 yard line but Memo’s pass in the end zone was intercepted by Paczewski with 38 seconds left. Dallas ran out the clock to get to halftime. Paczewski on his interception. “Definitely just read the QB, saw where the ball was going and had to get there and make the play.” He said.

The score remained the same until the third quarter was about to come to an end. Valley View with the ball, on a third and 8, Memo found Nick Kucharski for 15. On the next play, Memo got a 10 yard completion to Rupp then Memo found Kucharski again for a 22 yard completion to the three yard line. On second and goal at the one yard line, Memo snuck in from one yard to give the Cougars an 18-14 lead with two seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Mountaineers got the ball to start the fourth quarter at their own 49 yard line. They drove down the field and faced a fourth and 7 from the Valley View nine yard line. Zapoticky’s pass fell incomplete and Valley View got the ball back. After a three and out, Dallas got the ball back at the Valley View 44 yard line. The Mountaineers faced a fourth and 4, Zapoticky found Nick Farrell for 15 yards. Later in the drive, Geskey got his third touchdown of the game from three yards out for a 21-18 lead with 4:42 remaining in the game.

The Cougars got the ball hoping to take the lead. A Mountaineers penalty moved the ball into Dallas territory. On a third and 8 at the Dallas 36 yard line, Memo’s pass was intercepted by Gavin Lewis with 1:40 left. Dallas knelt on the ball as the Mountaineers won their first District Championship since 2019 with a 21-18 victory over Valley View.  Gavin Lewis on his game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter. “It’s awesome. Very hard fought. Fought very hard for that one, just knowing that sealed the game, it was just amazing honestly.” said Lewis.
