Liberty Township – Picking up right where you left off.
That’s what Liberty High School’s Dawaun Moody did Thursday night as Leopards routed Campbell Memorial 45-2.
As a junior, Moody rushed for 1,473 yards and 22 touchdowns. Thursday night, he rushed 11 times for 90 yards and six touchdowns. While catching two passes for 79 yards and completed two passes for 29 just for good measure.
“You know you always love that, but like I always say, the win is more important,” Moody said. “It’s great, but to put up 45 points as a team, that counts more. It’s all about momentum; when you put up 45 points, you got all the momentum in the world.”
Liberty has now won 13 of their last 15 meetings with the Red Devils, and after a slow start, they cruised to a mercy-rule victory.
Following a blocked punt, Moody capped a 3-play, 30-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.
In the second quarter, the Leopards took advantage of some short fields thanks to their defense, leading to Dillion Wright scoring on a 2-yard run and Moody scoring on an 18-yard run.
Liberty was one touchdown shy of the mercy clock at halftime when Moody scored on a 2-yard run with 35 seconds to play in the second stanza. He caught a 49-yard pass from Wright on the drive.
“Week 1 is so important, you have to come out fast, and I thought our kids did that,” said Liberty head coach Dom Prologo. “I wish we had competed a little harder at times. But I thought our kids competed really hard out there tonight. I thought we were aggressive, and anytime you outhit your opponent, you have a great chance of winning.”
Early in the third quarter, a sack fumble and more punting problems for the Red Devils led to Moody scoring on runs of 1, 18, and 8 yards, putting the mercy clock into effect midway through the third quarter.
Campbell Memorial got on the board late when they tackled Tashawn Taylor in the end zone for a safety.
As a team, the Red Devils managed only 74 offensive yards.
