Philadelphia Catholic League Week 10 Preview

CL Red Division

Roman Catholic @ St. Joes Prep (10/28 @7pm Upper Dublin HS)

Roman enters this CL Red Division game 7-1 outscoring their opponents by a margin of 266-128 and riding a 4-game winning streak. Their lone loss was to Maryland powerhouse Dematha Catholic which was just a 2-point loss in 5 OT’s. Roman last week scrapped to a 27-21 win over LaSalle and are more than ready for this big game. Leading rusher Dazhaun Hopkins has 663 yards & 7 total TDs. So. QB Semaj Beals already owns the school single season passing yards record as well as touchdown passes thrown (2223 yards & 23 TD passes). There are 4 receivers who all have at least 300 yards receiving with So. Ashdan Roberts (300 yards & 3 TDs), Tayden Mines (343 yards & 3 TDs), Luke Van Brill (388 yards & 4 TDs) & Sr. Jah Jah Boyd (JMU commit) with 7 touchdown receptions.

SJ Prep enters the game 7-1 as well with their lone loss coming at the hands of nationally ranked #4 IMG Academy in which they lost by 3 points. The Hawks ride a 7-game winning streak and have outscored their opponents 311-72. On the ground they’re led by the trio of Isaiah West (428 yards & 5 TDs). Erik Sanchez (319 yards & 2 TDs) & Kasseem Phillips (217 yards & 4 TDs). Senior star QB Samaj Jones (Cincinnati) has thrown for 894 yards & 10 TDs while rushing for an additional 234 yards & 5 TDs. The leading receivers for Prep are WR Brandon Rehmann (West Virginia) who has 4 TD receptions, Elijah Jones (Cincinnati) with his 3 TD receptions & David Washington Jr. (Kentucky) who has 2 TD receptions. Both teams have stars & tons of big game experience. In last year’s matchup SJP took home the regular season victory with a resounding 42-0 win so Roman will have a sour taste in their mouths heading into this weekend’s tilt.

La Salle College @ Father Judge (10/27 @6pm)

This game holds huge playoff implications as these two teams will meet next week as well in a CL semifinal game. The winner of this game will host the playoff game next weekend. La Salle (4-4) spearheaded by the duo of So. QB Gavin Sidwar (1953 yards & 21 TD passes) & Jr. WR Julian McFadden (621 yards & 10 TDs) have an explosive offense. The leading rusher is Jr. RB Stevie Davis (451 yards & 4 TDs). Defensively Dylain Clair has been a terror recording 50 tackles 1 interception 1 forced & recovered fumble and a sack. Leading the team in sacks is Grayson McKeogh (3). La Salle’s 4 losses were to teams with a combined record of 29-3 which shows they used their non-league schedule to prepare them for these CL Red Division games.

Father Judge enters the game at 4-5 with a 1-2 divisional record. Offensively they’re led by Sr. QB Tyler Yerkov (1574 yards & 19 TDs). His top targets are Sr. Nymier Appling (675 yards & 7 TDs), Sr. Eric Smith (357 yards & 5 TDs) and Gavin Hutz (443 yards & 6 TDs). Eric Smith also has 5 rushing TDs and a defensive touchdown via fumble recovery/return. Defensively for the Crusaders Derrick Kennedy leads the secondary with 2 interceptions. Eric Smith is the leading tackler from his safety position with 60 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries & 1 sack. Father Judge 5 losses this season have come to teams with a combined record of 30-4 so they’re very well prepared for this game and should be able to put points on the board to hang with La Salle.

CL Blue Division

Archbishop Ryan @ Neumann Goretti (10/28 @1pm)

Ryan enters the game at 2-7 and with Neumann Goretti already having wrapped up the CL Blue Division regular season title this game serves as just a dressing call for NG as they prepare for their playoff run. Ryan led by QB Frankie Mawson (1217 yards 11 TDs) will look to be the only CL team to defeat the Saints on Senior Day. Sr. WR Damien Morgan leads the team in receiving yards (463 yards) & TDs with 7 overall. For the Saints, they are led by Sr. QB Mekhi Wharton (921 yards & 9 TDs), Sr. Khamir Prescott (6 overall TDs, 1 interception). Defensively for the Saints Daniel Adefolarin leads the team with 30 tackles while Sr. DL Deshon Dodson has a team leading 3 sacks & 4 fumble recoveries. C’andre Hopper leads the secondary with 3 interceptions.

West Catholic @ Bonner-Prendie (10/28 @12pm)

The Burrs are still looking for their first win of the season (0-8) against the CL Blue Runner-Up Bonner-Prendie Friars. Due to West Catholic being the only 2A PCL team they’ll compete next week in a D1-12 subregional playoff game to advance to the PIAA playoffs. Bonner will use this game to fine tune things as they prepare for what they hope to be a lengthy 4A PIAA playoff run.

Cardinal O’Hara @ Lansdale Catholic (10/28 @4pm)

The O’Hara Lions enter this game at 6-3, a remarkable turnaround from their 1-9 2022 season. They’ll look to cap off the regular season with a win over a Lansdale team that’s 5-4 looking to have momentum before they play Egan for the 3A CL title.

Archbishop Carroll @ Conwell Egan (10/27 @6:15pm)

The Patriots will finish their season with a trip up to Egan looking to end the season on a high note. Egan will look for momentum heading into their rematch with Lansdale next week in the CL 3A title.
