We are fully entrenched into the 2024 season as all teams within the cities 3 leagues have between 2-3 games under their belts already. There are quite a few heavyweight games being played throughout the weekend and some that will be uncompetitive. Let’s dig into the best of the best for the upcoming weekend!!!!
Games of the Week:
East St. Louis HS @ Imhotep (Saturday 7pm): East St. Louis comes to the city of Brotherly Love ranked #68 in the country by MaxPreps to take on Tep which is ranked #67 in the same poll. This will probably be Teps biggest challenge until the D12 championship game. So. Joey McLeish threw 3 first half interceptions but settled down and along with Sr. RB Jabree Coleman-Wallace (Penn State) who scored a total of 4 touchdowns in their comeback win over Chester last Saturday. Defensively Tep has a physical front 4 and talented secondary that will matchup with the strength of East St. Louis which is a big physical offensive line & talented WR corps.
Frankford @ Benjamin Franklin (Friday 7pm at South Philly SS): Frankford is 2-1 while Franklin is 3-0 looking to add a statement win to their resume. QB Samir Smith is a dual threat for Franklin while utilizing his offensive weapons like Sr. WR David Winchester in the passing game. Frankford has been vastly improved from the past two seasons and look to be threats to challenge for the division title. This game being played under the lights with the city pro stadiums in the background should be highly exciting and competitive.
Roman Catholic @ Malvern Prep (Friday 7pm): In a battle of two big programs this serves as a marquee matchup. Roman is led by Jr. sensational QB Semaj Beals who holds over a dozen FBS offers. He has a talented & deep batch of receivers he can get the ball to in open space while also having a reliable RB in Xavier Kincade who averages over 7 yards per carry. Jr. Athlete Eyan Stead has also been a huge playmaker on offense for Roman, leading the team in receiving yards with 267 and touchdowns with 5. Defensively Roman is giving up only just over 10 points per game while averaging almost 54 points per game offensively. Malvern is coming off a 10-point win over Delbarton (NJ) in which they overcame a 17-point 4th quarter deficit. Jr. QB Jackson Melconian has taken the reigns as QB1 and last week threw for 240 yards & 2 TDs in the big comeback victory. Sr. FB/LB Andrew Pellicciotta leads the team in rushing and LB Jake Bauer leads the team with 14 tackles.
La Salle @ Haverford School: Both teams are vying for their league titles and have stars all over the field. Haverford is more of a defensive team while La Salle boosts a high-powered offense. Jr. DB Stephen Cobbs along with OL/DL Walt Frazier lead the Fords tenacious defense which has only given up an average of 8 points in their two games thus far. La Salle is led by Rutgers commit Jr. QB Gavin Sidwar along with his dynamic duo WR’s Julian McFadden (Syracuse) & DB/WR Joey O’Brien.
Conwell Egan @ Lansdale Catholic (Saturday 1pm): Conwell Egan is led by their RB tandem of Montay Zoryea and Sincere Fairey who last week both ran for over 100 yards in their win over Chichester. Lansdale is led by dynamic QB Yeboa Cobbold who also leads the team in rushing yards. Defensively for Lansdale they are led by Brandon Maisonet who has 8 tackles on the season including 3 sacks & 1 fumble recovery.
Players to Look out for this week:
- Imhotep So. QB Joey McLeish: After tossing 3 first half interceptions against Chester last week Joey bounced back to lead the Panthers to a comeback victory despite being down 18-7 at the half. This week against a nationally ranked top 70 opponent look for Joey to stamp his name as one of the best 2027 QB’s in the nation.
- Germantown Academy Jr. QB Xavier Stearn: Xavier is fresh off a school record 5 touchdowns thrown game last week while also rushing for 2 scores. He’ll face a Northeast defense this weekend that gave up 51 points to District 11 program Easton last week including 4 touchdown passes given up.
- Archbishop Wood Jr. RB Yasin Lowry: In Wood’s first CL Blue game they’ll face Archbishop Carroll. After being bottled up last week by the Bonner-Prendie defense look for Wood to get the ground game going early featuring plenty of Yasin carries.
- Ben Franklin Sr. QB Samir Smith: Samir has taken the QB1 reigns by the horns and leads the Electrons in rushing yards while also being steady under center finding his open targets downfield namely Sr. WR David Winchester. Franklin will host Frankford this week and look to throw the ball often while mixing in some RPO’s with Samir to keep the defense on their heels.
- La Salle’s Jr. WR Joey O’Brien & Sr. WR Julian McFadden: La Salle Jr. QB Gavin Sidwar is averaging over 250 yards passing per game and feeds the ball to his top two receivers often. Joey leads the team and city in receiving yards with 342 yards while Julian has 178 receiving yards. A physical Haverford team will look to put hands on the WR’s at the line of scrimmage to prevent them from running down field.
