The first week of the 2024 season has been completed so let’s do a quick recap of the 19 games involving city league teams:

Sr. WR David Winchester capped off the scoring with a TD reception from Samir. Tae also notched an interception in the win. For Brook Jr. Isaiah Carter rushed for over 100 yards & a score. He also notched a 99-yard kick return for a TD in the loss.

Archbishop Carroll 25 William Tennent 8: The Patriots used a stout defense to hold William Tennent total yards of offense in the win.

Imhotep Charter 38 Clarkson North 20: The defending state champions started off slow with an interception thrown followed by a quick run into the endzone for Clarkson that gave the visiting team an early 7-0 lead. Tep would miss an FG the ensuing drive but on their 3rd drive even the game. Jr. Isaiah Prater would return a punt 72 yards for a score to give the Panthers an 14-7 halftime lead. The second half Tep would break away behind So. QB Joey McLeish’s 23-yard pass to Zaire Pollard and a QB keeper TD to give Tep an 26-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Clarkson battled back with 2 3rd quarter scores to keep the game close with 11:24 left in the game but Tep closed out the scoring with PSU commit Sr. RB Jabree Coleman running in for the final score.

Northeast 13 Boys Latin 8: The Vikings got off to an early 13-0 lead on Boys Latin at the half behind an impressive performance from Jr. Athlete Kierre Stewart. They’d also get a solid defensive performance from Sr. DE Elijah Struis in the win.

Central 21 Thomas Edison 6: A suffocating defense by the Central Lancers kept Edison to only 121 total yards of offense in this non-league matchup.

Roman Catholic 45 Neumann Goretti 12: Roman would jump out early on Neumann behind 2 TD passes from Jr. QB Semaj Beals to Sr. Rayshawn Scott & Zamir Newsuan, an GF and an rushing score from Xavier Kincade. At the end of the 1st quarter Roman led 24-0. They’d tack on 2 more scores before halftime to take a 38-0 lead into intermission. Rayshawn would add his second TD reception early in the 3rd quarter before Neumann got on the board in the final quarter with 2 rushing TDs by Sr. QB Deante Ruffin.

Roxborough 22 Olney 20: In what most would consider an upset Roxborough jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a QB keeper. Olney would respond late in the 2nd quarter with their own rushing score to tie the game at 6-6. With under 30 seconds left in the half Olney would strike with a 27-yard TD pass and reception to take a 12-6 lead into the half. Roxborough would fight back with 3 second half scores to escape with the key road non-league victory.

Springfield 28 Cardinal O’Hara 7: The Lions of O’Hara fell in defeat to neighboring Springfield after falling behind early 13-0 in the first quarter. Jr. QB John Welde finally got the offense moving late in the 2nd quarter which led to a 3-yard Isaac Day rushing score to reduce the Springfield lead 13-7 at the half. Unfortunately, the Lions offense would stall continuously in the 2nd half and the defense despite its valiant effort would surrender 2 more touchdowns giving visiting Springfield a 28-7 victory.

Imani Christian 45 West Catholic 7: West Catholic traveled to central PA to play in the York Rose Bowl against in-state program Imani Christian. Unfortunately, the Burrs were unable to keep pace with the high tempo offense Imani utilizes. For West Catholic Sr. QB Kai-El Durham finished the day with 100 yards on 10 rushes and a late touchdown while also throwing for 39 yards.

La Salle 45 Harrisburg 7: LaSalle Jr. QB Gavin Sidwar (Rutgers) threw for 5 TD passes including 2 to Syracuse commit Sr. WR Jules McFadden (2 TDs) and 2 to WR/DB Joey O’Brien. Gavin finished the day with 268 passing yards in the huge statement win for the Explorers.

Archbishop Ryan 21 Father Judge 17: Archbishop Ryan would leave the host with a key league victory in the season opener for both programs. Ryan Sr. QB Frankie Mawson passed for 131 yards & 2 scores while also rushing for 54 yards & a touchdown. Sr. WR Damien Morgan finished with 5 receptions for 77 yards & a touchdown. Defensively the Raiders got interceptions from Cameron Jones & Michael Pacitti in the victory.

J.P. McCaskey 41 John Bartram 14: The Bartram Braves fell to JP McCaskey in a non-league opener for both programs. The Braves stayed close in the first half only trailing 12-0 but surrendered 22 3rd quarter points in the losing effort.

Lansdale Catholic 32 School of the Future 0: The Lansdale Crusaders took an early 2-0 lead on Future after forcing a safety. They’d follow that up with sensational QB play from Yeboa Cobbold who threw for 166 yards & 1 touchdown. He’d also rush for a score in the win. Also getting in the scoring column were WR James Webb (4-87), RB David Melcher, Gio Allison (Blocked Punt recovery) & Chase Anderson (3 extra points & 1 FG).

Riverdale Baptist 56 Conwell Egan 3: Egan fell behind early 30-0 in the 1st quarter and never rebounded. The lone bright spots were a successful FG made by Johnny Austerberry & an interception recorded by Abu Fofana.

Simon Gratz 26 Mastery Charter North 6: In the HBCU classic these two programs who have grown a natural friendly rival over the years matched off at Lincoln University. The Bulldogs once again got the best of the Pumas behind strong performances from RB Tray Parsons & QB Jaylen Simpson.

Manheim Central 24 West Philadelphia 8: The West Philly Speedboys fell behind quickly 4-0 on a pair of safeties but were able to get an lead on Manheim Central when Sr. Saire Bailey recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown to give them an 8-4 1st quarter lead. After that they would never gained momentum to challenge the Barons of Manheim Central as they surrendered 20 unanswered points. Sr. RB/LB Zafir Cleveland rushed for 61 yards on offense while also racking up 10 tackles on defense.

Weekly Star: Overbrook Jr. RB Josiah Carter (5-5 150) put on a performance nearly willing his team to a victory in a game at Ben Franklin. Josiah is also a highly ranked track star who is in the top 20 in the state of Pennsylvania in the 100 meters. An Overbrook resident he is a 2nd year starter for Brook after spending his freshman year at Bonner-Prendie. Over the spring and summer, he ran in the AAU track & field circuit in Florida & North Carolina. Not only is he a star RB he also doubles as a starting CB and dangerous returner. Despite the early season loss Josiah remains upbeat about the season stating, “We made lots of mistakes, we showed we can drive the ball down the field we have to capitalize and score touchdowns”. While the first half was back and forth with both teams retaking the lead Josiah remained upbeat and kept his teammates energy & spirits high as he stated, “It’s my job to keep the guys energized & we make the plays needed”. Josiah finished the game with just under 200 yards of total yards including an electrifying 99-yard kick return for a touchdown. While the college offers have yet to matriculate for Josiah, he’s preparing to take visits & camp at a few universities this upcoming spring to get his name out there. After Friday’s performance I’m sure coaches will be taking notice of his talent.
