District 9 Review – Week 3

The game of the week: Union/AC Valley, who lost to Central Clarion 72-0 the prior week, defeated Brockway 12-7 in a stunning upset of PFN’s #6 ranked 1A team in the state.  This may have been the biggest upset in years in relation to District Nine football.  Brockway scored first and led 7-6 at the intermission, but the Falcon-Knights took the lead for good in the 3rd quarter.  Halfway through the 4th quarter Brody Dittman intercepted a Brockway Rover pass at the Union one-yard line.  From there they put on a drive that ate up precious time before Brockway got the ball back.  The Falcon-Knight defense then did their job.  To say the Union/AC Valley defense played inspired ball is to underestimate how well they played after getting humiliated the week before.  Congrats to Union/AC Valley.  They proved why the games are played.  

Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits:

Quarterbacks:

  • Jase Ferguson, Central Clarion, threw for 279 yards and 4 scores.
  • Brody Dittman, Union/AC Valley, threw for 212 yards.
  • Tyler Dunn, Curwensville, accounted for 5 TDs (3 passing and 2 rushing).
  • Shane Magee, Otto-Eldred, threw for 307 yards and 5 touchdowns.
  • Brody Pentz, Bucktail, accounted for 218 yards on the ground and 2 TDs.
  • Cameron Larkin, Ridgway threw 2 TD passes and ran for 2 other scores.
  • Trent Beachem, Moniteau fired 3 TD passes.
  • Nick Wilfong, Port Allegany, passed for 212 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • Charlie Krug, Brookville passed for 218 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Receivers:

  • Danny Vanvladricken, Coudersport, caught 6 passes for 111 yards and 2 TDs.
  • Mason Clouse, Redbank Valley had 107 yards receiving.
  • Shene Thomas, Otto-Eldred, accounted for 110 yds receiving scoring twice.
  • Dawson Smail, Central Clarion, had 118 yards receiving.
  • Dan Anderson, Kane, snared 7 passes for 104 yards.

Running Backs:

  • Noah Cherry, Elk County Catholic, ran for 301 yards and scored 4 TDs.
  • Landon Martz, Punxsutawney, garnered 177 yards rushing.
  • Garret Nissel, DuBois, scored 3 times running the ball.
  • Hunter Scherer, Karns City, ran for 3 touchdowns.
  • Drew Byers, Redbank Valley, had 157 yards and scored twice.
  • Jonah Ganoe, Smethport, score 3 rushing touchdowns.
  • Ryan Mason, Smethport, had 110 yards rushing and 102 receiving.
  • Tanner Pettingill, Bucktail, scored 3 times via the ground game.

Defense and Special Teams:

  • Brandon Ross, Redbank Valley, had 13 tackles.
  • Brady Quinn, Central Clarion, returned an interception 78 yards for a TD.
  • Jack Pete, Brookville, had a 51-yard pick six.
  • Matthew Davis, St. Marys had 16 tackles.
  • Colby Barr, Sheffield, scored a touchdown of 70 yards on an INT.
  • Will Wortman, Elk County Catholic, kicked 2 FGs (32 yards and 42 yards).
  • Matthew Gilmore, Elk County Catholic, had a 45-yard pick six.
  • Hunter App, Otto-Eldred, returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD.
  • Owen Bish, Union/AC Valley had 11 tackles.

Other Notes:

  • If Central Clarion and Redbank Valley continue their winning ways, they will both be unbeaten at 9-0 when they meet in New Bethlehem on October 27, the last game of the regular season.
  • Redbank in 1A and Central Clarion in 2A are now the only D-9 teams ranked by PFN. They are also the only two unbeaten teams in District Nine after four weeks of play.
