The second round of the 3A playoffs where 9-1 Elizbeth Forward played host to 7-4 West Mifflin. The Warriors are coming off their first round bye so they were well rested and prepared for this game while West Mifflin did not have the luxury of a first round bye.The Titans knocked off Mt.Pleasant last week by the score of 40-14. The hype surrounding this game was one of the best we had to cover so lets see how things panned out.

The first quarter got off to a fast start when the Warriors stripped the ball from the Titans running it back to the house via Dominic Derenzo. That would only get the party started after a three and out and a short punt the Warriors marched down the field and cashed in on the goal line with Charlie Nigut extending the Warriors lead to 14. After tons of penalties the first quarter came to a close.

The second quarter was much more favorable to the visiting Titans though. The Titans didn’t waste much time getting into the endzone on a rushing touchdown by Richie Fix which would cut the lead back to being a one score game. That shifted the momentum back to the Titans favor but failed to capitalize on any of the opportunities that the Warriors gave them after multiple 3 and outs. It would be again the defense to come up big for the Warriors forcing the Titans to fumble at their own one-yard line to recover it in the endzone for a Touchdown to get back that two-score cushion looking to go into half time. At the end of the second there was a field goal attempt, but it got blown dead due to a Titan being offsides it did not matter as they would deflect the ball causing the field goal to be short as time expired.

As the third quarter got underway it was really the time for the Titans to get back into the game being down two scores coming out of the half. But the Warriors had something to say about that immeditly going down and making a statement by Charlie Nigut scoring this second of the day putt the Warriors up 28-7. The Titans quickly responded by using their own ground game to score points with a Johnson Tayvion rushing TD to cut the lead back to a two score game. The rushing touchdown really got things rolling for the Titans after a Warriors punt the Titans stormed down the field capped off by Richie Fix’s second TD of the night making the Warriors lead down to 7.That wrapped a quarter in which really turned the tide of the ball game.

As the 4th Quarter began, I was very optimistic we could see another upset but that was not the case. Both teams grinded the clock out with their run heavy offenses chewing more and more time off the clock. Then the Warriors started to break away a bit and really start to nail this game shut. It started with a Ryan Menessia Touchdown pass to Chad Rager to put the lead back to two scores. The Titans were still very much in the game but as the clock kept ticking away it looked more and more bleak for West Mifflin. After a shanked put the Warriors were set up prime position to end the game with another score. A ground and pound approach would do just that with a short run by the fullback Jace Brown to really put a cap on the game.

With that the Warriors will go ahead and face a very good team in the Avonworth Lopes which should be a great ground and pound game next week to see who moves on to the championship. As for the Titans they had a good showing, but they were outmatched in the running game by the Warriors. I expect them to be back in the playoff fold this time next year again vying for another district championship.
