Green Hornets Score 23 Second Quarter Points and then Stave Off Trojan Second Half Comeback.

EMMAUS- The 2022 version of the “Battle of Cedar Crest Blvd” certainly lived up to the hype, though the Emmaus Green Hornets certainly did all the could early to blow the game open and make it a rout. The Trojans of Parkland would not let that happen on Friday night as they made a game out of it, a late Jake Fotta score for Emmaus would close out the regular season for both squads as the Hornets took home the trophy with a 40-25 win in a Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Contest at the Hornets nest on Senior night.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the opening twelve minutes, as Emmaus struck first when Dylan Darville took a Jake Fotta pass across the middle and then maneuvered his way down the visitor sidelines for an explosive 65 yard score with 5:22 left Owen Garcia made the PAT and a 7-0 lead.

Parkland would tie the the game at the 1:25 mark, when quarterback Luke Spang threw a perfectly placed spiral, that WR Jack Harrison made a diving catch in the back corner of the end zone, Gryffin Mitsifer also made the PAT.

The second quarter was all the Hornets as the scored three touchdowns and a safety to take a commanding 30-7 lead heading into intermission. The barrage started with a Fotta touchdown from two yards out with 8:26 left in the half. Then on the next drive for Parkland, Spang threw a ill-advised pass as he was scrambling towards the sidelines right to Darville who promptly took the gift back 55 yards to extend the Hornets lead to 21-7. A bad snap on a Trojan punt attempt went out the back of the end zone for a two-point safety. After getting a great return to the Trojan 42 after the free kick, running back Tylik Jarvis scored from a yard out making the score 30-7 as the teams headed to the locker room.

The heart and soul of Trojans came out strong at the start of the second half, after offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct calls negated a long Trojan return of the kickoff. Parkland scored in less than two minutes on a 61 yard bomb from Luke Spang to Nakhi Bullock to make it 30-14.

Garcia would then hit on a 38 yard Emmaus field goal at the 6:36 mark of the quarter to make it 33-14. The Trojans would score the next eleven points however to make it an eight point game heading into the fourth quarter at 33-25. Tremba would toss his third touchdown of the night from 15 yards out to Trey Tremba with 4:47 left. Mitstifer would connect on a 42 yard field goal on the next Trojan possession.

With the game clock malfunctioning on the scoreboard for the fourth quarter, time was kept on the field. The defenses dominated the quarter as neither team put any points up, but then with just about two minutes left, Fotta broke free from a couple of tacklers and sprint to the end zone for a 44 yard run that would complete the scoring in this the 63rd meeting between the two schools.

The series started in 1959 and Parkland leads the series 41-19-2 coming into last night’s game. After the game the Western Lehigh Exchange Club sponsored the offensive and defensive players of the game for both schools Luke Spang and Trey Tremba took the awards for Parkland, while Fotta and Darville picked up the hardware for the Hornets.

Both teams are a lock for the PIAA District XI 6A tounament, Parkland finished the season at 6-4 and will be either the fifth or sixth seed in the eight team sub-regional that includes two teams from District 2, the Hazleton Cougars and the Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack. Emmaus completed the season at 9-1 and will be the first or second seed depending on what happens in the “Battle of the Christmas City” Saturday afternoon when Liberty faces Freedom at BASD Stadium that is a 1pm kickoff.
