Slippery Rock – Farrell scored 34 second-quarter points en route to a 49-0 victory over Slippery Rock Saturday night at Troy Alan Stadium.

Having already clinched the Region 3 title, Farrell started slowly but came to life in the second quarter, scoring five touchdowns to set the stage for a showdown next Friday night against Cathedral Prep.

“We started a little slow and sluggish,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “We were able to pick it up in the second quarter by doing what we’re supposed to do and get the win. I think my guys were looking ahead to next week and weren’t playing like they should. Overall, it was a good win for us.”

In an interesting twist, Slippery Rock threatened to score first before the Steelers’ defense forced a turnover on downs at their 23-yard line.

Farrell got the ball rolling late in the first quarter when they drove 73 yards in ten plays, capped with Juelz Johnson’s 3-yard run with 44 seconds to play in the opening frame.

Johnson would add a 30-yard touchdown run 27 seconds into the second stanza, immediately following another turnover on downs by the Rockets.

Juelz Johnson rushed for a game-high 97 yards on 12 carries all in the first half.

Farrell then drove 54 and 47 yards on their next two possessions, capped off by Kabron Smith scoring on a 3-yard run and tossing a 13-yard touchdown to Julius Phillips.

Kabron Smith finished the night 12-for-13, passing for 107 yards with two touchdowns and rushing for 34 yards on four carries.

Farrell did not play their starters in the second half.

With over a minute to play in the first half, Danny Odem returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown.

Farrell then beat the first-half clock, scoring on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Simeir Wade with 11 seconds to play following a 37-yard drive and invoking the running clock for the second half.

“We only scored once in the first quarter,” Pegues said. “We started doing what we’re capable of doing, and offensively, we started putting points on the board. I’m a little ticked off right now because I feel like my guys weren’t prepared to play tonight. As a head coach, it’s my job to make sure they’re prepared. I’ll make sure they’re ready next week.”

Slippery Rock’s best chance to score in the game came early in the fourth quarter when the Rockets drove from their 43-yard line to the Farrell 7-yard line but were stopped for a 4-yard loss on a 4th-and-1.

“The kids battled tonight,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Webndereusz. “Last week, we were beating Wilmington at halftime 20-13. We’re in a football game this week at the end of the first quarter. We were not able to stop the tide from becoming a tidal wave. Once that tide started, we could not put the brakes on it.”

Eli Anderson led the Rockets, completing 8-of-15 passes for 44 with three interceptions while rushing for 32 yards on six carries.

The Steelers then drove 89 yards in nine plays, with backup quarterback Aaron Pegues throwing a 27-yard touchdown to Dey’mar Cain with 71 seconds to play.

Farrell will now meet Cathedral Prep next Friday night. The Ramblers spot a 5-3 record.

“Like I told my guys, if come out lackluster next week, we’re going to be on the other side of that score,” Pegues concluded. “We know they’re going to come out and give it their all, but we’ll be up for the challenge. We always talk about how we’ll play anybody, and this is us playing anyone.”

Slippery Rock concludes their 2023 campaign at 1-8.

“This senior group of guys has been through two special years with this program,” said Wendereusz. “Unfortunately, this wasn’t where we wanted those years to end. They also had high aspirations for this year, but it didn’t go that way. It’s disappointing and sad tonight. Down the road, hopefully, they’ll look back and enjoy the memories they had and skills they learned through the game of football.”
