Bethlehem Catholic Improves to 2-0 with Impressive Win Over Whitehall Saturday Afternoon.

BETHLEHEM- On a day that saw temperatures in the upper 80’s Saturday afternoon across the Lehigh Valley. The play of the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks was just as hot as they rolled to a 34-21 win over an equally talented Whitehall Zephyr team at BASD Stadium in a rare afternoon EPC South contest.

The Golden Hawks wasted little time putting points on the scoreboard, as the opening kickoff went for a touchback. The Hawks took possession at their own 20. Running Back Jacob Sutton took a simple handoff from quarterback Cayden Vassa and promptly found a hole off tackle, broke a few tackles and then outran the Zephyr defense en route to an 80 yard score and a quick 7-0 lead.

Whitehall then took their turn on offense as they swept downfield starting at their 25 and they went five plays to tie the game at seven, when quarterback Trey Dogmanits connected with Braden Bashore for a 20 yard score. Dogmanits went 3 for 3 and 62 yards on the drive. The game was barely a minute and half old and it would like it was going to be a be a track meet.

Becahi would go up 14-7 with 1:22 left in the opening quarter when Cayden Vassaused his legs to roll left and outran the Zephyr defense to the corner of the end zone from eight yards out capping off a 13 play drive after the Golden Hawks forced a turnover. The teams went to intermission with that score intact

Whitehall came out with the ball to start the second half but could not sustain a drive and gave the ball back to Bethlehem Catholic. Cayden Vassa capped off the drive with a touchdown pass from 21 yards out to his younger brother Carter Vassa increasing the lead to 20-7 as Whitehall blocked the PAT with 7:53 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Zephyrs fumbled the ball back to the Hawks on the first play of their next drive. Becahi wasted little time cashing in for another score as Cayden hit Carter around the ten yard line and Carter scooted in to make it 27-7. The play covered 28 yards at the 6:23 mark.

The Vassa to Vassa connection completed the trifecta struck again with 2:17 left in the third quarter as again Cayden rolled left from the Whitehall ten and had Carter in single coverage in the end zone and he outleaped the defender for the score and a 34-7 lead.

Whitehall would get two scores late in the game when Trey Dogmanits took a page from the Becahi formula as he found his brother Talon for a 58 yard score. Then with just four seconds left to play Dogmanits hit Bashore with a score to make the final 34-21.

Bethlehem Catholic improves to 2-0 and will be back at BASD Stadium next week against Pocono Mountain East (0-2) who lost to Northampton 51-0. Whitehall (1-1) will host Easton(1-1) dropped a 37-20 decision to Allentown Central Catholic.
