Recap of Week Nine and a Look Forward to “Rivalry Week” in District XI’s Colonial League.

We are set to cross the finish line in the 2021 PIAA high school football regular season in the Colonial League. There are still some slots open for District XI playoff spots yet to be decided and there are some teams who can improve their seeding in the upcoming playoffs.

Many teams around the area are also gearing up for rivalry week in the final game of the season, so we may see some upsets as sometimes you can throw the records out the window when it comes to this game and you play for family, community and pride. So let’s get to it as we take a look back to what happened over the weekend.

8-1 Palmerton Blue Bombers 45 6-3 Minersville Battlin Miners 24

Palmerton overcame slow start against Minersville Friday night to defeat a much improved Minersville team 45-24. Quarterback Matt Machalik scored four times in the game. He had runs of 10, 68, 28 and 15 yards and totaled 217 yards in the contest. Palmerton also had a Danny Lucykanish 27 yard score as well as a Lucas Heydt 25 yard touchdown with three minutes left to go in the game closed the deal. Machalik has a district leading 26 toudowns via the ground attack and 1,245 yrads rushing on the season and captured the tri-fecta by beaing the first Colonial/Schuylkill League palyer to rush and throw for over a thousand yards(1,016 passing)

Minersville quarterback John Adams, had himself quite a night, throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Adams’ first score was school-record setter as he hooked up with Jason Cullen for a 53 yard score after Minersville took advantage of a roughing the kicker call on Palmerton and Cullen coming up with a head’s-up play on a bad snap on a punt, that rolled in the end zone and Cullen hitting his receiver Adam Frie for an eleven yard gain on a 4th and 8. Adam’s now holds the record for most touchdown passes at Minersville. Congratulations!

District XI Playoff Scenarios Heading Into Week Ten:

1A(Top 4 Teams Qualify) Tri Valley(7-1), Williams Valley(7-1) and Nativity BVM(4-5) have seized a playoff spot. Williams Valley will host Tri-Valley Friday night with the number one seed up for grabs. Nativity holds the third spot with a win over Minersville(6-3). (3-6)Mahanoy Area can take the third position if BVM loses and Mahanoy defeats Shenandoah Valley(2-5). Marian Catholic(2-7) has an outside shot with a win over Pine Grove and have both Mahanoy Area and hope from some help.

2A(Top 4 Teams Qualify) Palmerton(8-1), Northern Lehigh(6-3) and Catasauqua(7-2) are in. The Big game in the class is in Slatington Friday night as Palmerton and Northern Lehigh will vie for the number one seed. Catty can be the number two seed if it can pull of the upset at Northwestern Lehigh. Minersville can still qualify if the Miners can take out Nativity BVM and could get the third seed with a win and a Catasauqua loss.

3A(Top 4 Advance) These teams are in: North Schuylkill(9-0), Nortre Dame Green Pond(7-1) and Jim Thorpe(5-4). For all intense and purposes North Schuylkill will be the top seed even with a loss to Pottsville and NDGP beats Wilson Area. JT will be the third seed. New Hope-Solebury(1-7) has the inside tract for the final spot as they face a winless William Tennent who is a 6A team. Tamaqua(2-6) is at Panther Valley, Salisbury(2-7) will be at a surging Southern Lehigh and Pine Grove will face Marian Catholic.

4A(Top 4 Teams Qualify) Northwestern Lehigh(9-0), Allentown Central Catholic(6-3) and Pottsville(7-2) have earned a spot in the postseason. Much like North Schuylkill in 3A, NW Lehigh is a lock at the #1 seed even with a loss to Catasauqua. The two seed is still murky depending on how they fare this weekend. Central Catholic will face Bethelehm Catholic(2-6) in the “Holy War” Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium. Pottsville will face the Spartans of North Schuylkill. Becahi must defeat ACC to have any shot at a playoff spot. Saucon Valley needs a lot of hope to qualify.

5A( Top 4 Teams Advance) East Stroudsburg South(6-3) and Whitehall(3-5) clinched the top two seeds, even if the Zephyrs lose against Northampton(9-0). Southern Lehigh(3-6) will be the third seed with a win. District 2’s Wyoming Valley West(3-6) can take the fourth spot with a win over Crestwood. Pocono Mountain East(1-6) can sneak in if it can beat Pocono Mountain West and get some help with a Valley West loss to start.
