Previews and Prediction of the Two Contests I will be Attending in Week #9.

6-2 MINERSVILLE BATTLIN’ MINERS at 7-1 PALMERTOM BLUE BOMBERS FRIDAY 7PM

Palmerton is riding a six game winning streak after losing 17-14 to Jim Thorpe on September 3rd. They come in averaging just over 43 points per game led by sophomore quarterback Matthew Machalik. Machalik coming off a 13 carry for 242 yard performance last week with 3 touchdowns in a 41-18 win over Mahanoy Area including runs of 73 and 75 yards. He has completed 60 of 105 passes for 938 yards and 7 scores and 2 interceptions on the season, while rushing for 1,028 yards on 91 carries and 20 TD’s.

Junior Daniel Lucykanish has 19 receptions for 347 yards and two touchdowns. James Denicola is averaging 20 yards per catch and leads the team in tackles for the Blue Bombers with 87. Steven Jones is second on the taem rushing for 394 yards on 48 carries and 7 touchdowns.

Minersville will roll into Palmerton riding a three game winning streak of their own after losing to Mahanoy Area 20-13 on September 24th. Senior signal-caller John Adams has completed 123 passes on 193 attempts for 1,981 yards 21 touchdowns and 6 picks, he has also rushed for 215 yards on 93 carries. Three receivers have over 500 yards on the season Jason Cullen (549 yards), Jared Graeff(548 yards) and Brock Polinsky(521 yards). Jones had a brilliant game last week against Schuylkill Haven going 15 of 23 for 305 yards and three touchdowns.

Palmerton is leading the District XI power rankings in 2A, while Minersville is in third. The Blue Bombers will look to control the line of scrimmage to keep Jones and company off the field. This would be a huge win for the Battlin’ Miners program if they could go on the road and pick up a “W”, but I think Palmerton is on more of a roll and continue the streak. Palmerton 42 Minersville 28

6-2 BETHLEHEM FREEDOM PATRIOTS at 2-5 BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC GOLDEN HAWKS SATURDAY 2PM at BASD STADIUM
LAST MEETING FREEDOM 45-0 WIN 10-24-2020

Bethlehem Area School District Stadium will be the backdrop for Saturday afternoon’s contest between the two inter-city rivals. After starting out 2-2 with losses to Emmaus 13-6 and Parkland 19-15, the Freedom Patriots have ripped off four straight wins including a 42-0 shutout of Pleasant Valley. Quarterback Brian Taylor has thrown for 865 yards on 53 of 96 passes with 9 touchdowns and 6 int’s. Senior Deante Crawford leads the ground attack with 912 yards on 139 touches and has found the end zone 18 times. Tayler has three receivers with over ten catches each Ethan Neidig 12/182 yards, Owen Johnson 11/277yds and Jalen Fletcher 12/177yds. Johnson leads the defense with 47 tackles on the sesason.

Becahi is struggling this year After a hard fought 28-21 win over cross-town rival Liberty, the Golden Hawks dropped their last two games to Emmaus 41-3 and Parkland 35-7 and is an uncharacteristic 2-5 on the season. Jared Richardson is under center for the Hawks and is having a good year statistically 105 of 174 passing for 1,182 yards 7 scores and 3 interceptions. running back Zyaire Morris leads the ground attack with 425 yards on 112 carries and 6 touchdowns. Jaiden Ellis-Lahey is the teams leading receiver with 34 receptions for 471 yards and two scores.

Defensively is where Bethlehem Catholic struggles giving up just over 30 points/game and have given up over 40 points three times in seven games, while only scoring 23 points per game. Becahi is 4-11 against Freedom and it’s going to be 4-12 after Saturday as Freedom is trying to keep pace with Emmaus and Parkland in the District XI 6A playoff race as the Patriots currently sit in third place in the District XI 6A Power Rankings. FREEDOM 49 BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC 10.
