Imhotep Rising Senior DE Zahir Mathis has announced his intentions to sign with The Ohio State University in December. Zahir is a soon to be 3-year starter for the Panthers. After playing behind 2 All-American Defensive Ends in Enai White (Texas A&M) & Keon Wylie (Penn State) as a freshman, he had a breakout sophomore campaign and finished his junior season with all-state honors. As a junior Zahir got to star along the DL with seniors Jahsear Whittington (Pittsburgh) & David Johnson as that unit led a strong defensive squad that ultimately willed the Panthers to their 2nd ever state title. Zahir will have a senior season to prepare for in hopes of winning another city title along with another state title before heading off to college in the summer of 2025. Zahir other finalists were South Carolina, Florida State, Tennessee & Texas. In the end he couldn’t turn down Coach Larry Johnson and the relationship he built with the coaches, staff & players. The system he said fits him perfectly and stood out. With Ohio State playing in the Big 10 Eastern Division his family won’t have to travel too far for many games as Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers are all within a 2-hour drive from Philadelphia. The trip to Columbus is within driving distance as well as it’s just a 6-hour drive.
