Ken Talley led the Vikings defense with 5 sacks and a safety.

West Catholic in northeast Vikings met on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to play their first spring football game of the 2021 season. The Vikings, live with the vision and talent, got off to a solid start defensively and drove 57 yards for the first score of the game. Running back Terail Greene ran the ball in from 8 yards out but the point after failed and the score was 6 – 0 with 6:55 left in the first quarter. But that’s pretty much the best the Viking could offer in the first half.

But that defense, they kept the Burrs offense ineffective for the most part of the game.  Ken Talley led the way with five sacks, one of the a safety.  That safety came in the second quarter with 10:40 left to play in the half and gave Northeast an 8-0 lead.

Following the safety, Northeast got a nice return on the free kick that set them up at the West Catholic 25.  It wasn’t easy, but eventually the Vikings got a td run from one yard out by Daquan Robinson and went into the break with a 16-0 lead. “We looked a bit sloppy out there today, with no true preseason but I’m just happy that the kids got to play . Today is the 366th day that we’ve been out of school so it’s important to have a little bit of normal” said Northeast head coach Eric Clark.

For as tough as the Viking defense played, there was a bright spot for the heavily outmanned Burrs. Running back K’saan Green. The talented junior rattled off several long runs and managed to keep the Burrs in the game by helping to keep the Viking offense off the field.  “He’s going to be a good player for us” said Burrs head coach Brian Wood. “We obviously wanted to showcase him in the fall, but he did a great job for us today.” Green carried the ball 13 times for 81 yards in the first half.

The second half got off to a sloppy start for both teams as neither could seem to move the ball with and type of consistency. I wasn’t until the end of the third quarter that the Vikings were able to get something rolling on offense, but it took a defensive spark to motivate them.  Geo Fabian stepped in front of a pass by Burrs quarterback Keaon Athill and returned the interception 30+ yards to the Burrs 40.  Several plays later Diandre Green scooped up an errant snap and lofted the ball to Zymil Lee who was wide open in the endzone giving Northeast a 22-0 lead.

Just two plays later the Viking defense sealed the win when Fabian returned a Burr punt 64 yards for the score.  Keino salmon added a score late in the fourth for the Vikings. Next week Northeast faces Martin Luther King, a winner over Frankford last night, while West has the weekend off.
