Stoneboro – Lakeview continued its historic season with a 20-12 victory over Cochranton Thursday night in Stoneboro.

One week ago, the Sailors defeated Eisenhower 48-28 to improve to 5-0 for the first time in the program’s 59-year history. Despite missing a few key starters, including leading rusher Mitchell Tingley – Lakeview continued to make history on Thursday night.

It might not have been the best game the Sailors have ever played, but head coach Bill Hickman won’t make excuses.

“I’m proud of our football team,” Hickman said. “We played a sloppy football game tonight, but having starters out is never an excuse. It’s always the next person up. The guys that filled in did so very well in my book. One positive we can take out of this game is that great teams find a way to win even when they’re not playing their best. I think that happened tonight.”

Both teams capitalized on early turnovers that led to first-quarter touchdowns. The Sailors recovered a fumble at the Cardinals’ 19-yard line, and on a 4th-and-16, Leyton Zacherl connected with Clarence Barber for a 25-yard score.

Cochranton then recovered at the Lakeview 25-yard line, leading to Blake Foulk’s 7-yard touchdown run.

Blake Skiles raced 80 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff, putting the Sailors ahead 12-6.

“Blake Skiles and Danick Hinkson, any time they touch the football, they can score,” said Hickman. “They’re both track stars, good football players, and they can catch the ball, too.”

Faced with another fourth down midway through the second stanza – Zacherl threw up a pass that Danick Hinkson made a great play on to haul in a 45-yard touchdown.

“We have a ton of confidence in our receivers,” said Hickman. “I don’t know that would have done that early on in my tenure here; we’re not afraid to take our shots with this group of receivers we have here. We know there is a good chance that they will get the football. They’ve been doing that all season.”

The two touchdown passes were the first two completions by Zacherl, who finished the night 3-of-10 passing for 68 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

“I have full confidence in Leyton Zacherl,” Hickman said. “He threw for 274 yards last week. We can throw the football when we need to – to advance to a certain level in high school football, you have to be able to throw the football.”

Danick Hinkson finished the evening with two receptions for 43 yards with the score while also intercepting a pass on defense. Brayden Booher, starting in the backfield in place of Tingley, rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries to lead the Sailors.

“I knew Brayden would do a good job,” said Hickman. “He just needed to get going. Once he got his confidence up, he was fine. We have total confidence in him if he ever has to fill in again.”

The Cardinals took the football to begin the second half and nearly ate up the entire third-quarter clock, marching 81 yards in 18 plays, capped off with Isaiah Long’s 7-yard run following a 10:41 drive.

Noah Cummings led Cochranton with 109 yards rushing on 23 attempts, Long added 75 yards on 15 carries, while Foulk chipped in with 37 yards on six totes.

The Cardinals had two fourth-quarter drives with a chance to tie the game but came up empty one via a lost fumble and their final drive ending on downs at the Lakeview 37-yard line with 1:41 to play.

Cochranton will attempt to bounce back next Friday night when they host Reynolds.

Lakeview will have the big showdown next Friday when they travel to Cambridge Springs to play the Blue Devils.

“Before today, I wasn’t thinking about that game,” Hickman concluded. “We’re always focused on taking one game at a time. Now, it is Cambridge Springs time. The only thing I’ll say about them is that they’re a great football team. They’re well-coached, and they’ll be hungry from the result last season. We’re looking forward to a great game.”
