Khalid Bueno an imposing 6-2 225lb linebacker at MLK Monday evening announced he was shutting his recruitment down and had committed to Division 1 program Stony Brook University. Stony Brook plays in the CAA so his family, friends and coaches will be able to see many of his games as the other schools in close driving distance are in PA, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.

Khalid held a dozen offers and his finalist were Stony Brook, Army, Akron and Lafayette. Khalid chose Stony Brook because “during the visit the atmosphere and spending time with the coaches, everything just felt right. The coaches reminded me of the coaches I have at King and they gave me a sense of just work hard”. Khalid is a player who has experienced the lows and highs at King. As a freshman he was apart of the team that went winless until thanksgiving and was demoted from the top division to the liberty division. As a junior he led the team to the Liberty Division championship. And as a senior with a young team he led the Cougars to the Public League 5A title game. He credited his success to “the fact that I didn’t do it alone I had the help of teammates, coaches and the supporters who came out to each and every game”.

Khalid who is a strong academic student looks to major in sports medicine or kinesiology. With one more game left to put on the Purple and Gold uniform he is within 5 tackles of overtaking the career tackling the record from former Cougar LB Jordan Alexander (312) who also serves as the assistant head coach for King. With regards to closing in on the record Jordan expressed “it’ll mean the world to me because as a young freshman I never thought I would be in the position I am in today to make history so beat believe I’m going to destroy that record”. As far as message for younger kids who may want to attend and play for the MLK program Khalid stated “I would tell the young kids that the coaches at MLK are some of the best people in the country, without their coaching I wouldn’t have been able to have been as good as I am now. They laid the foundation as their expertise and intelligence is unmatched and they truly make you feel welcomed and just give you the determination and motivation to be great in all aspects of life not just football”.
