The Mount Lebanon Blue Devils are the 2021 PIAA 6A champions.

With the 2021 PIAA season coming to an end Saturday evening the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils took down the St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks 35-17 in a game dominated by Alex Tecza. Tecza finished the championship game with 88 yards rushing on 26 attempts with two touchdowns and five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown.

“You don’t know how much this means to our entire, school, community, and team. The first in school history and we couldn’t be more excited this is a special feeling” said Eli Heindreich.

To start the game the Hawks struck early. However, just one play later the Blue Devils were able to strike back. Joey Daniels hit Michael Beiesdorf for an 86 yard touchdown. Noah Bhuta nailed the pat making the score 7-7.

On the next Hawks possession, a fumble recovered by Jack Smith put the Blue Devils in prime field position. A few plays later Eli Heidenrich stumbled into the endzone from 13 yards out to put the Blue Devils up seven after the Bhuta pat.

Midway through the second quarter, Daniels hit Smith for a huge 44 yard gain. A few plays later Daniels hit Tecza for the six-yard touchdown. Bhuta nailed the pat making the score 21-7 Blue Devils. The Hawks were able to score before halftime and missed a field goal attempt to make the score 21-14.

To open the second half the Hawks managed to get a 26-yard field goal from Antonio Chadha to make the score 21-17 and this would be the last points the Hawks got on the night.

After the field goal, the Blue Devils managed to get back-to-back interceptions on the following possessions. Matt Wertz picked off Samaj Jones twice and one lead to points.

After the second Wertz interception, the Blue Devils were able to put points on the board. Tecza would pound his way in from two yards to put the Blue Devils up 28-17. And to close out the game Tecza bounced out left and scampered into the endzone to put the Blue Devils up 35-17 in which would be the final score of Saturday evening’s game.

“It was a hard game, it was a war and a dog fight that team is good, what is so good about us is that we are so versatile and it’s hard to gameplay against us.” Said Tecza after the game.

“You don’t see the way he practices and the way he loves his teammates and the way he’s unselfish.” Said coach Palko about Tecza.

The Mount Lebanon Blue Devils are the 2021 PIAA 6A State Champions and this is the first time in program history. “We are very proud to be representing western Pa it is unusual to be in this situation so soon but three years you don’t plan on that.” Said, coach Palko.

And proud should be the way the whole team and community should feel. The Blue Devils cap off the year with a 15-0 record, with a WPIAL title, and most importantly a Hershey gold medal.
