Balanced Attack Propels Spartans to Convincing Win Saturday Night.

LEHIGHTON- Saturday night was the first time in two weeks that the Spartans took the field to play a football game. Last week’s District XI 3A semi-final was canceled, due to an in-school incident within the Tamaqua school district and the Spartans were awarded a forfeit win into the championship game with the surprising Jim Thorpe Olympians. Jim Thorpe coming off an upset win over Notre Dame Green Pond.

The layoff had no effect on the Spartans, who rolled to six straight scores, all in the first half, to capture the district championship for the third time in four years 40-7 and will advance to face Neumann-Goretti(10-1) out of District 12 at a site and time to be determined. The Saints pounded Kipp-DuBois 62-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans rushed for 220 yards and passed for an additional 155 yards behind quarterback Jake Hall, as he picked up over 100 yards in the contest including a 30 yard dash for a touchdown. He had touchdown passes of 6 and 46 yards to Joey Flails in the victory.

On defense, the Spartans controlled the line of scrimmage as the Olympians had nearly a yard rushing in the first half and had several three-and-outs as the fell behind 40-0 by intermission. The second half was played in mercy-rule conditions. Olympians running back Cam Tinajero, was held to under 60 yards rushing, but did have a 20 yard score in the second half to avoid the shutout.

Flail, in addition to his two receiving touchdowns, also had a nifty 68 yard punt return for a score in the second quarter. Running back Jaxson Chowansky was held in check much of the night, but he too found the end twice on two short one yard runs.

After the game Chowansky was happy to be back on the field and looks forward to what’s ahead in the state playoffs.
