BETHLEHEM TWP- The North Schuylkill Spartans and the Crusaders of Notre Dame Green Pond are no strangers to each other on the football field. They usually meet in the District XI playoffs, however, Friday night they met in the regular season with the formation of the Schuylkill/Colonial League and both teams ranked in the top five in the most recent PaFootballNews.com in the state 3A rankings. The Spartans at number one and Notre Dame at number 4. When the dust settled North Schuylkill solidified their ranking by dominating the Crusaders by a 42-21 score before a packed house at Crusader Stadium on a perfect night for football.

The game started out on a positive note for the home team as they took the opening possession at their own 40 and went on a 12 play drive culminating in a 16 yard pass from quarterback Colin Quintano to Logan Castellano with 7:09 left in the first quarter and a 7-0 lead.

That would be the only highlight in the first half for Notre Dame as North Schuylkill answered that score, quickly, on their initial drive going 80 yards on just six plays as Spartans big fullback Robbie Weitz bulled his way in to the end zone from seven yards out to tie the score at 7-7 just 2:42 later.

Jaxson Chowansky, of North Schuylkill, scored on a 37 yard dash through the center of the Notre Dame defense with 10:57 remaining in the half to make it 14-7.

Then with the Crusaders trailing 14-7, Crusader RB Logan Castellano looked to pick up a first down at their 42, the chains started to move downfield, but then were called back for a measurement at the 33 and the Crusaders were ruled short making it fourth down and Notre Dame was forced to punt. An eight play 73 yard drive by North Schuylkill followed and quarterback Jake Hall found the end zone from 17 yards out with just 54 seconds left till intermission and a 21-7 lead.

The Spartans extended the lead to 28-7 as running back Josh Chowansky scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night going in from five yards out with 5:40 left in the third quarter. The Older Chowansky rushed for 163 yards on 28 carries on the evening.

On the ensuing kickoff Notre Dame mishandled the ball and turned it over at their own 10 yard line. Hall ten found his receiver Joey Flail for a nine yard score just 30 seconds later making it 35-7

Quintano, who came throwing for over 1,600 yards on the season and coming off a 500 yard performance against Jim Thorpe completed 15 of 28 passes for 142 yards and the one score, left the game with a leg injury Nadir Sandrrs connected with Tarif Muhammed for a 28 yard score cutting the lead to 35-14 with 10:58 left in the contest.

With 6:52 left Josh Chowansky took a hand-off and looked like he was stopped at the line but kept his legs churning and sprinted in from 46 yards out making it 42-14.

Castellano closed out the scoring on the night for Notre Dame from 28 yards out with 3:39 left in the game.

These two teams will be favored to win out their remaining games and could meet again in the district playoffs down the road. North Schuylkill (7-0) will host Salisbury(1-5) next Friday. The Falcons will be at Pan Argyl Saturday afternoon. Notre Dame Green Pond(5-1) will be at home against (2-5) Palisades who defeated Tamaqua 35-7 Friday night.
