Mechanicsburg-

Peters Township’s undefeated WPIAL championship season came to a close with a loss at the hands of District 12’s Imhotep Charter in the PIAA Class 5A Championship game this evening.  In what they hoped would be Peters Townships first football state title, the Indians just couldn’t overcome a dynamic Panther offense and smothering defense.

After choosing to defer their choice to the 2nd half, Peters Township began the game kicking off to Imhotep.  The Indian defense seemed to have no answer for the Panther rushing attack on this opening drive as Imhotep methodically drove the ball down the field and put the Indians behind 7-0 after the opening possession.  The Indian offense fared no better as Imhotep forced a 3 and out and a punt.  However, on the ensuing drive it seemed as though the Indians’ luck may have turned around as an attempted Panther pass was deflected high up in the air by Reston Lehman and intercepted by Peters Township’s  Dante Recker.

This set up the Indians inside Imhotep territory to start their next offensive possession. The Indian offense led by quarterback Nolan DiLucia (10-22, 83 yards, 1 TD) and running back Vinny Sarcone (8 rushes , 36 yards) drove the Indians in to field goal range on the drive, however the kick would miss wide left and the Indians would come away empty handed from their defensive takeaway.  The Indian defense would come back out on the field and after giving up a big pass play would see Imhotep extend their lead to 10 after the Indian defense would tighten up and keep the Panthers out of the end zone.  On the ensuing offensive possession for Peters Township they could not get anything going and were forced to go 3 and out.  The following defensive series for the Indians would see them be unable to contain the Panther running attack as they would be unable to keep the Panthers out of the end zone and find themselves in a 17-0 hole with 5:33 left in the opening half.

The next drive would see the Peters Township offense come alive.  Dilucia would complete multiple passes to his wideouts to move his offense downfield and then cap it off with a spectacular touch pass in the back of the end zone to Tommy “Toe Tap” Aspinall(5 rec, 36 yds, 2 TD) to give the Indians life and bring the score to 17-7 with 2:55 left in the first half.

This life would be short lived as the Indian defense would show little resistance on the next Panther possession and give up another touchdown just before the half.  The second half of the game would be more of the same as the Indians who were hoping to capitalize of the momentum from their late score in the first half would be stymied on offense and defense the majority of the 2nd half.  The bright spot of the 2nd half for the Indians came as sophomore QB Lucas Rost would find Aspinall again in the corner of the end zone for the Indian touchdown, but only after being forced in to action due to an injury to Dilucia just a few plays prior.

This would cap the scoring for the Indians on the night as they fell to Imhotep by a score of 38-13.  The loss in this PIAA 3A Championship game brings the Indians’ season to a close with a record of 15-1. Although obviously disappointed with the result, Peters Township head football coach T.J. Plack said “We knew what we were getting in to, we needed everything to go our way, we dropped the ball down the sideline, got behind the sticks..”, “Our kids weren’t gonna quit, that’s why we’re here”.  When asked about the Peters Township community the coach added “They’re fantastic, the school, the community, just everyone, everyone that lives in Peters, has moved out of Peters and has contacted us and communicated…and I didn’t know there was that many Peters fans!”
