After five weeks of football, we have officially reached the halfway point in the season. District Six has been very exciting to watch with multiple surprising teams and various state contenders. Let’s review District Six at the midseason.
Most Surprising Team
Glendale Vikings 4-1 (3-1) Conference
The Glendale Vikings are having an outstanding start to the season, which included their first 3-0 start in 15 years. It started with a victory over Windber, a team that was ranked to begin the season at Single-A. They also got wins over Meyersdale, Juniata Valley, and Southern Huntingdon. They lost a close game to Moshannon Valley, but have won some very impressive games this season.
Their remaining schedule includes Mount Union (4-1), Claysburg-Kimmel (3-2), West Branch (0-5), Curwensville (1-4), and Northern Bedford (4-1). Glendale could be a sneaky team to watch out for in the 1A District Six playoffs.
Contenders at 1A
Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders 5-0 (5-0) Conference
The Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders are the number one ranked team in Single-A this season. They are dominating their Laurel Highlands schedule with wins over Bald Eagle, Bishop McCort-Carroll, Bellefonte, Huntingdon, and Central. Their remaining schedule looks good for them too, which could give them a smooth run through the District Six playoffs and into the state playoffs.
Their remaining schedule includes Tyrone (2-3), Bellwood-Antis (4-1), Chestnut Ridge (3-2), and Philipsburg-Osceola (2-3). Their week 10 matchup is a crossover with a team from the west of the LHAC. They are looking like the favorite to win districts at 1A and make a run in states.
Northern Cambria Colts 4-1 (4-1) Conference
The Northern Cambria Colts are having a very good season in a tough Heritage Conference. They just lost to a Double-A contender in Cambria Heights, but have looked very good with wins over Purchase Line, United Valley, Conemaugh Valley, and West Shamokin. They are looking like a team that could compete with Bishop Guilfoyle, but a tough remainder of their season will decide that.
The Colts remaining schedule includes Marion Center (4-1), Penns Manor (4-1), Conemaugh Township (3-2), River Valley (4-1), and Portage (2-3). This is a tough schedule, but if they can finish out strong, they could be another team to watch out for to win District Six at 1A.
Notable Other 1A Teams
Penns Manor (4-1)
Claysburg-Kimmel (3-2)
Contenders at 2A
Cambria Heights 5-0 (5-0) Conference
The Cambria Heights Highlanders are off to a very good start to the season winning all five of their games. They are at the head of the Heritage conference after a big win over Northern Cambria. They have beaten two other 4-1 teams in River Valley and Marion Center, along with wins over Purchase Line and Conemaugh Valley.
Their remaining schedule includes Portage (2-3), Conemaugh Township (3-2), Homer-Center (0-5), West Shamokin (0-5), and Penns Manor (4-1). They have a very favorable remainder of their schedule which should set them up nicely to contend in the 2A playoffs.
Richland Rams 4-1 (4-1) Conference
The Richland Rams are once again a team to watch out for at the 2A level. They have won four of their five games, with their only loss coming to a 3A contender in Penn Cambria. Their wins this year have come against Huntingdon, Westmont-Hilltop, Bishop McCort-Carroll, and Forest Hills. They have a solid team this year and could be a team to win a District Six Championship.
Their remaining schedule includes Somerset (2-3), Greater Johnstown (2-3), Clearfield (5-0), and Chestnut Ridge (3-2). Their remaining schedule is solid, but they have a real test against Clearfield. Nonetheless, Richland will be a team to watch out for in the playoffs.
Notable Other 2A Teams
Marion Center (4-1)
River Valley (4-1)
Mount Union (4-1)
Bellwood-Antis (4-1)
Contenders in 3A
Penn Cambria Panthers 5-0 (5-0) Conference
The Penn Cambria Panthers are a top team in the Laurel Highlands this season with an undefeated record thus far. They have beaten some good teams in Richland, Philipsburg-Osceola, Forest Hills, Bedford, and Central Cambria. They have a very favorable rest of the season, which could get them a District Six Championship.
Their remaining schedule includes Westmont-Hilltop (0-5), Chestnut Ridge (3-2), Bellwood-Antis (4-1), and Bishop McCort-Caroll (2-3). Penn Cambria is looking like the top 3A team from the Laurel Highlands and will likely be the one seed in the district playoffs.
Contenders in 5A
Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers 5-0
The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers are one of the top teams in the district with an undefeated record at 5A. They have beaten some solid teams in Altoona, Taylor Allderdice, Allegany, Butler, and Mifflinburg. Their remaining schedule will be difficult, but they are looking like a contender at 5A in districts and even states.
Their remaining schedule includes Fort Hill (2-1), Jersey Shore (4-1), Selinsgrove (3-2), Williamsport (4-1), and Dubois (4-1). Watch out for Hollidaysburg for the remainder of the season.
