Potent Running Attack From Columbia Montour Area V-Tech Subdues Shen Valley Saturday Afternoon.

South Centre Twp- On a sunny and hot late summer afternoon, the Columbia Montour Vo-Tech Rams opened up their 2024 football season before a capacity crowd at Wen Cerra Memorial field with a convincing 48-17 win over the visitors of District XI Shenandoah Valley Blue Davils Saturday afternoon.

Behind the strong running attack of Braxtyn Brown and Mason Haught the rams managed to gain 450 yards rushing on 55 tallies. With Brown atoning for 325 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown. Haught carried the ball 12 times for 72 yards and scores and found the end zone three times in the contest.

The rams jumped out to an early 14-0 lead as Haught opened the scoring with a four yard run that capped a 79 yard drive on eight plays, that was followed up by a 12 yard score quarterback Myles Koser, a freshman popped a 12 yard score on a broken play with 2:34 left to play in the opening quarter, that drive included a 48 yard burst by Brown to setup Koser’s score.

Shenandoah Valley, however, would score the next 17 points to take the lead. The first coming off after a Joel Nunez punt return and subsequent penalty on the rams set the Blue Devils up inside the CMVT 30, a couple of plays later RB Jonnuel Reyes ripped off a 32 yard touchdown run to make it a 14-7 game with 9:45 left to play in the half. Reyes was the leading rusher for Shen Valley with 55 yards on 5 carries.

Shenandoah Valley’s defense would force a Koser fumble on the Rams next drive at the vistor’s 41 yard line a seven play drive would ensue leading to a Jeremy Thomas seven yard score to tie the score at 14 at the 3:58 mark of second quarter. Thomas ran for a total of 44 yards in the game.

With 3:06 left before intermission the Blue Devils defense came up big again as the forced Koser into another mistake this time an interception by Aiden Phinazee at the Rams’ 17 which led a 41 yard field goal by Sam Mentusky which gave the Blue Devils their only lead of the game at 17-14 at the 1:34 mark

The Rams were not done yet because it only took the home team four plays to regain that lead as Brown ripped off an electrifying 59 yard touchdown run his only score of the game but it couldn’t have come at a better time giving his team a 20-17 lead as both teams headed for the locker room.

A surprise onside kick by CMVT to start the second half that was recovered by the Rams, led to  touchdown pass from Koser to Landon Hipps in the corner of the end zone to make it a 28-17 score with 10:06 left in the third quarter. The Rams’ defense pitched a shout-out the last 24 minutes.

Mason Haught would add two more scores to his collection as he took the first from seven yards out and then a 3 yard scamper to close out the scoring on the afternoon.

Coach Mark Varner, of Columbia Montour Vo-Tech said after the game, “It feels good to be 1-0 going into  our next game a team we know a little about, but I am sure our kids will be ready.”

CNVT (1-0) will be at Morrisville , out of District 1 in the Philadelphia area. The Bulldogs are 1-0 as well after a 28-6 win over New Hope-Solebury Friday night. Shenandoah Valley (0-1) will be at home with Minersville (1-0) coming off a win against Halifax 39-0.
