Riverview Rolls Past Summit Academy

Herman – Riverview opened up a 40-0 third-quarter lead and cruised past Summit Academy 40-18 Saturday afternoon at Stephen Sherer Field.

For the Raiders, it was a nice bounce back from a 42-22 setback against Jeannette last Friday night, improving their record to 4-3 and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

“This was a good game; our kids played hard,” said Riverview head coach Trevor George. “We have some things we need to work on because we have a tough stretch in front of us, and we need to win a couple of those games to make the playoffs. We’re going to celebrate right now, but it’s right back to work.”

Riverview scored on their first four possessions, opening up a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Raiders rushed for 304 yards while totaling 405 yards of offense.
Riverview took the football and needed only 57 seconds to open the scoring when Carlo Buzzatto scored on a 14-yard following a quick 55-yard drive.

“Carlo is an outstanding running back, and we got Dino Yario back this week who ran hard us,” said George. “Alex Schultheis, Rio Stotts, and all of our playmakers made plays in space. It was nice to see everything come together and mesh.”

Rocco Cecere then connected with Alex Schultheis on a 39-yard touchdown completion following a fumble recovery.

The Raiders pushed their lead to 21-0 after the first quarter when they marched 67 yards in 11 plays, capped off with Dino Yario’s 1-yard run with 1:15 to play in the opening stanza.

“It was important to get the jump on the early,” George said. “It was weird playing somewhere else on Saturday afternoon. Our kids didn’t have to adapt too much like other teams do – but being on a bus on Saturday morning was still a little weird. Besides that, we came out of this game healthy, and our junior varsity team got some time to play, which was awesome.”

Summit Academy moved the football deep into Raiders territory on their next possession when Kye’mere Robinson caught a 33-yard pass from Mason Bulick and had an 18-yard gain on the ground, setting up 1st-and-goal.

However, on 4th-and-goal from the three, Robinson was stopped just short of the goal line at the 1-yard line.

Riverview then went on a 12-play, 99-yard drive where Rio Stotts scored from a yard out with 4:10 to play in the first half – a Raiders fumble in the red zone late in the first half was their only blunder offensively on the afternoon.

“That was awesome to see,” George said. “That was big for us because we’ve let up too many points this season. That was huge for the adjustments we made this past week. The kids now believe in some of the new things we’re doing.”

In the third quarter, Riverview scored two quick touchdowns to put the mercy clock into effect – Cecere threw his second touchdown pass to Schultheis, covering 12 yards and succeeding a 49-yard drive, following a bad snap that resulted in a 10-yard loss at the Knights’ 6-yard line – Buzzatto scored on 2-yard run giving the Raiders a 40-0 lead with five minutes to play in the third quarter.

Rocco Cecere completed 4-of-7 passes for 91 yards with a pair of touchdowns, while Alex Schultheis was on the receiving end of both touchdowns and finished the game with a team-high 71 yards on three catches.

Carlo Buzzatto rushed for a game-high 178 yards on 18 carries and two scores, while Dino Yario carried the ball nine times for 57 yards – Rio Stotts chipped in with 45 yards on eight carries, each scoring a touchdown a piece.

Summit Academy scored three times against the Riverview junior varsity team, the first of which closed out the third quarter when Kye’mere Robinson caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Esias Taylor.

The Knights would add a pair of fourth-quarter scores. The first came after holding the Raiders on downs; Taylor and Robinson again connected on a 58-yard touchdown pass with 8:03 to play.

Then Robinson completed the hat-trick when he intercepted backup quarterback Connor Kmetz and raced 79 yards for a touchdown.

Kye’mere Robinson led the Summit Academy with three receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 38 yards, scoring three total touchdowns, and intercepting a pass on defense.

Riverview now improves to 4-3 on the year and will host Leechburg next Saturday afternoon.

“Leechburg’s a good team with talented players, and we need to come out and prepare, compete, and play hard the best we can,” concluded George.

Summit Academy falls to 0-7 on the season and will host Shenango next Saturday afternoon.
