On Oct. 4, the Fort Cherry Rangers defeated the Cornell Raiders by a score of 35-6. Junior quarterback Matt Sieg ran for a touchdown and threw for three touchdowns, all to senior wideout Shane Cornali.
Sieg’s rushing touchdown from one yard out opened up the scoring, just two minutes and 45 seconds into the game, as Fort Cherry won the coin toss and elected to receive. After forcing Cornell to punt, Fort Cherry got the ball back and extended their lead to two possessions on what was Cornali’s first touchdown of the night. A missed extra point on Fort Cherry’s first touchdown prompted a two point try, in which Sieg completed a pass to sophomore running back Ryan Huey to make it 14-0.
Cornell scored their first and only points of the game on a 26 yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback M.J. Stuckey to senior running back Walter Clarit. On a 4th down with 20 yards to go, Clarit had separation in the back of the end zone and made the catch to put the Raiders on the board.
Fort Cherry scored on a 4th down of their own with six minutes left in the first half when Sieg found Cornali for a 42 yard touchdown, his second touchdown catch of the night. On their next possession, Huey scored on a run from eight yards out to put Fort Cherry up 28-6.
Another Cornali touchdown on 4th down made it 35-6 in favor of the Rangers with five and a half minutes left in the third quarter, and this was the last scoring play of the game.
With the win, Fort Cherry has now won seven straight games to start the season. Next week, they take on Bishop Canevin at Dormont Stadium. With the loss, Cornell has dropped their second game in three weeks to fall to 5-2, and will play Rochester next week on the road.
