Sights and Sounds from the Liberty vs. Delaware Valley Scrimmage

Taking the field for the first time on the new turf of BASD Stadium, the Liberty Hurricanes and Delaware Valley Warriors had a scrimmage on Saturday morning to prepare for their opening games this coming week. Huge road games await both teams, with Liberty visiting Pennridge and Del Val coming back to BASD Stadium to face Bethlehem Catholic. The teams also will look different, yet similar from the ones that last took the field in 2025.
Liberty enters the season losing 2 standout players from last year in starting QB, Antonio Fontanez, and WR, Jake Pukszyn. Replacing 2 of the most important players from their run to the District 11 6A semifinals last year, which included a 26-14 quarterfinal win over rival Freedom, before their eventual 38-20 loss to Easton, will be a tough task for Coach Daignault. Antonio’s little brother, Sophomore, Dominic Fontanez is competing with Sr, Alsaiah Gross for the starting QB job. However, the winner of the starting QB job will have the pleasure of throwing to standout returning WRs, Zyaire Davis and Mekkhi Mackenzie, as well as having an offensive line that returns most of its starters.
Delaware Valley also will have its fair share of differences from last year, as they lost 15 seniors to graduation, including their primary offensive weapon in 3 year starting FB, Mike Iuzzolino and starting QB Colin McGarvey. For a run first team like Del Val, Iuzzolino is a huge loss that Coach Olsommer will have to replace, as he also looks to get his 200th win as head coach, being only 3 wins away from that milestone. Sr, Lucas Petersheim is the favorite for the starting QB job, and will have the benefit of throwing to returning standout Sr TE, James Dabney. Del Val is trying to build upon a season in which they made it to the first round of PIAA Class 5A Playoffs, losing to Hollidaysburg 56-42, after squandering a 21-0 lead.
Highlights from the scrimmage, as well as interviews with both coaches previewing their respective teams upcoming season rounded out their last full week of preparation before they enter their 2026 campaigns.
