SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – Slippery Rock landed their first verbal commitment of the 2025 class Monday evening. Tyler Heckathorn, a wide receiver for Blackhawk High School, announced in a tweet that he would be continuing his football career at Slippery Rock University.

Prior to the season, WPIAL Insider ranked Heckathorn as the #108 player on their Top 300 list, and #20th on their WR list. Tyler was also ranked #39 on The Times’ Top 40 players in Beaver County. So far in 2024, Heckathorn has recorded 25 receptions for 282 yards and 4 TDS.

Tyler will be joining his brother, Carson, who is a redshirt sophomore on the #6 ranked Slippery Rock team. Carson, a tight end, has appeared in all five games thus far, recording a 16-yard reception in week three against Shippensburg. Tyler’s other brother, Ryan, also plays receiver for a local collegiate powerhouse. Ryan is a graduate student on the #7 ranked Grove City Wolverines.

Heckathorn was offered by head coach Shawn Lutz and The Rock on September 23. It’s unknown if Tyler has received any offers from other colleges, but he has been on visits to other PSAC schools such as California (PA) and Seton Hill.

The Blackhawk Cougars are currently 4-3 on the season following wins over Beaver Falls, Southmoreland, Tough, and Ambridge. This comes just one year after finishing 1-9, a season that Heckathorn only appeared in 2 games before a season ending injury cut his junior season short. The Cougars will host WPIAL powerhouse Aliquppa this Friday evening at 7:00PM.
