Minersville improves to 5-1 with a key Colobial/Schuylkill win over Pen Argyl.

MINERSVILLE- The bleak weather forecast held off long enough Friday night to allow for a fantastic football game FRiday night at Minersville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium as the hometown Battlin’Miners held off a valiant effort of the Green Knights of Pen Argyl in a key Colonial/Schuylkill League contest on a misty night in coal region country.

Led by quarterback Dante Carr and the punishing running of Luke Stevenosky and a couple of huge stops by the Miners defense en route to a 35-20 victory before a moderate but boisterous crowd.

The Green Knights opened up the contest with the opening kickoff, which only yielded a fourth down punt. On the Miners first possession they managed to cross midfield and with the ball on the 46, Carr took off around his left side, avoiding several would-be tacklers on a zig-zagging score at the 8:18 mark of the quarter. The PAT was no good leaving the score at 6-0.

That lead would not last for too long as Pen Argyl’s star running back Damien Tyminski would find a gap in the defensive line line and sprinted 69 yards for a Green Knight touchdown four minutes later and the conversion was good giving the visitors a one point lead at 7-6.

The first quarter scoring barrage would continue as Stevenosky would get around the edge of the line and take it into the end zone from 17 yards out putting the Miners ahead 14-7 as they converted the two point run with Carr scoring with 2:52 on the clock. The score was set up by a fumbled punt by Tyminski as he looked to make a move to avoid a defender but the slick ball came out and Minersville pounced on it.

Neither team could duplicate what they did on offense in the first twelve minutes in the second quarter as both defenses arose to the occasion and quarter was score at 14-7 as the game went to intermission.

Pen Argyl used a surprise onside kick to open the second half and on the slick natural grass field the ball hit a Miner defender and scooted around and the Knights secured possession. Quarterback Brad Rismiller lofted a perfect pass down the seem to WR Alex Moser who made the reception and coasted in for a 34 yard score tying the game at 14 wth 8:51 to play in the quarter.

On the Miners ensuing drive Carr and Stevenosky moved the ball downfield, where from the Green Knights 20 yard line Carr would roll to his left and again, Pen Argyl had it played well, but a great individual effort allowed him to cross the goal line giving Minersville the lead again at 21-14 at the 3:47 mark of the third quarter. Carr finished the night with 84 yards rushing and the two scores.

Pen Argyl would not go away however as on their drive after the Carr touchdown, Brad Rissmiller ripped off a 57 yard touchdown run at the 3:00 mark, but the PAT was no good leaving the 21-20 in favor of the home team.

As the quarter ran down, Minersville penetrated to the Pen Argyl ten yard line as time expired to close out the quarter and on the first play of the fourth, it was Stevenosky one more time for his second score of the game and a 28-20 lead. Stevenosky finished with 182 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns.

With Rissmiller leading the way, the Green Knights moved into Minersville territory at the 45, but on fourth down and needing four yards he could only pick up three and the Miners were back in business. It was Luke Stevenosky one more time as on the second play of the drive he gashed the Pen Argyl defense for a 57 yard touchdown run with 5:35 left in regulation and a 35-20 lead.

As Pen Argyl desperately tried to get back in the game with 3:50 left and the ball at the Minersville 39, Rissmiller dropped back to pass but the ball slipped out of his hands and was recovered by Minersville.

The Miners effectively ran the clock down by picking up a couple of first downs, including the last one by Carr as it looked like he could score again as he broke through the line, but wisely slid in bounds to keep the clock moving and then two kneel downs concluded the contest.

Quarterback Dante Carr had this to say after the game

Tyminski picked up 146 yards of offense in the game and the one touchdown, while Rissmiller threw for over 100 yards and rushed for 69 more and had the two scores one passing and one rushing.

Minersville improves to 5-1 on the season and will be on the road next Friday to face Catasauqua (3-3) The Roughriders lost to Schuylkill Haven 22-13 Friday. Pen Argyl is now 3-3 and will be home next Saturday afternoon “Up On The Hill” to face Palisades (2-4) The Pirates dropped Panther Valley 55-6 Friday.
