“Any wins a good win. Super happy for our kids, for our program, for our fans. It’s been a while since we’ve won a playoff game” said Marion Center head coach Adam Rising after his Stingers pulled off a thrilling 35-27 double overtime win at Mount Union. “We kept bending, had a few mistakes but our guys in the trenches didn’t break”.
The game started out like a track meet, then once the adrenaline wore off they played a football game. A very good football game. The Stingers struck first with a 10 yard td run by Tyler Phillips.

Mount Union struck right back with a quick td drive of their own. Nasir Collins busted loose for a 39 yard score to tie the game at 7. Not to be outdone, Marion Center shot right back with a 32 yard td run from Mason Ploskunak making it a 14-7 lead for the Stingers.

Mount Union had a chance to tie it up again after a long, time consuming drive that reached the Stinger 14 but Troy Stovinsky, a freshman, picked off Maddox Hobbs in the endzone to halt that drive. Stovinsky would later play a much larger role in the game when starting quarterback Camden Rising left the game with an injury in the second half.
After exchanging punts, Marion Center got a huge run from Rising to the Mount Union 30 and a face mask penalty put the ball on the Trojan 10. From there Ploskunak plunged in from three yards out.

Marion Center had a chance to extend the lead late in the first half but Julian Weirich picked off Rising in the end zone. Holding a 21-7 lead in the fourth quarter the Stingers made a big mistake on a punt. Caizon Scott snagged the punt and raced down the sidelines for a 50 td to cut the lead to 20-14 with 11:45 left to play. On the ensuing kick the ball hit a Stinger player and the Trojans recovered at the 47. They punted but field position and momentum were on their side. Then another huge mistake came when Tyler Phillips fumbled and Mount Union recovered on the Stinger 28. Six plays later the game was tied with 5:06 left in the game when Maddox Hobbs called his own number and scored from 9 yards out.

For overtime Mount Union had the first offensive series and it took just one play for the Trojans to take their first lead of the game. Hobbs hit a wide open Georgie Bilger for the score but they missed on the point after.

Marion Center took three plays and scored on a one yard run by Phillips. They too missed the point after. Then it was Marion Centers turn to go first. The Stingers scored on another one yard Phillips td. During the kick attempt the ball skidded on the ground from center and the holder, Stovinsky, just grabbed the ball and raced to the endzone.
On the following play the Trojans dropped the ball on the exchange from Hobbs to Collins and Carter Knox recovered it for the win.
“I was in a total panic, I didn’t know what I was going to do” said Stovinsky of being needed to step in and play quarterback. “But I had the assistance of my teammates, my captains, and they brought me through it. They coached me up”. On the overtime experience: “I thought I was going to puke. I was real nervous”.
The Stingers will play Richland in the District 6 class 2A semifinal next week. Mount Union finishes their season with a record of 8-3.
