Overtime Victory for the Blackhawks
Friday night’s game was held at the home of the Blackhawks and both teams put up a great battle. The Buffaloes got the first touchdown of the night at the very end of the first quarter. Susquenita remained patient and scored their first touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 halfway through the second quarter. Susquenita Senior Blaise Swancer (#6,WR) scored a 28 yard receiving touchdown thrown by Sophomore Rex Wilson (8,QB). Newport scored one more touchdown but missed their extra point leaving the score at 7-13 for the first half.
The second half of the game started off with a Newport field goal in the third quarter. This was followed by a Blackhawk touchdown in the fourth quarter by Susquenita Junior Jacob Brown (#4, RB).
This made the score 13-16. Near the very end of the game, the Blackhawks managed to make a field goal and tie the score. Junior Corey Warren (#14,K) put the Hawks back in the game with his field goal kick. At 16-16 the game was sent into overtime.
Both teams scored touchdowns on their first possessions so the score went to 23-23. The Buffaloes started on offense next and could only manage a field goal, leaving the score at 26-23. Once Susquenita got the ball, they got a touchdown to win the game. The final score in overtime ended at 29-26.
Susquenita seniors say it was tough coming back when they were down in the fourth quarter, but it came down to instinct and what they were taught. They had faith in each other as teammates and reminded themselves that “one play does not define us.” The win felt great for Susquenita Senior Braden Law (#60,MLB,C). He says that he will never count his team out because the score does not reflect their gameplay. Another tactic of his is to never underestimate his opponent. The Blackhawks aim to take the momentum from this win into next weeks game at Juniata and the rest of their season.
