High school football is finally back and Week 1 reminded us how great the sport really is. The District 6 had so many upsets and exciting games to open up the 2024 season, which included the annual Altoona vs Hollidaysburg game, the Laurel Highlands champion going down, and much more. Let’s take a look at the top games in the District 6 from week one.
Glendale Upsets Windber
The Glendale Vikings opened up their season with a big upset win over the Windber Ramblers. The PFN Rankings Team had Windber ranked #8 in Single-A. The game ended with a score of 14-7.
A year ago from this game, Windber won at home with a final score of 51-6. The Ramblers even returned a solid group of guys from that team, but Glendale still found a way to get revenge.
The Vikings quarterback, Logan Skebeck, tossed a 32 yard touchdown to Rhylan Hoopsick-Bell to get Glendale a lead early and later ran for a three yard go-ahead touchdown. With less than two minutes to go, Windber fumbled and Glendale recovered to end the game. Glendale won just three games last year and missed the playoffs. That makes this upset victory mean so much more to the program as they look to return to the postseason.
Bellefonte Upsets Central
Similarly to the Glendale upset, Bellefonte was blown out by Central in 2023 and sought out for revenge in 2024. On Friday night, the Red Raiders did just that with a big 18-7 victory over the Dragons.
In 2023, Bellefonte lost to Central 49-0, but Central is not the same team after losing over 20 seniors. Bellefonte returned a solid core, but was able to do everything right Friday night.
Quarterback Liam Halterman led the Red Raiders with two rushing touchdowns in the win. Aden and Ashten Howell both had interceptions and the Bellefonte defense picked up four sacks.
Hollidaysburg Knocks Off Altoona
In the annual battle between Hollidaysburg and Altoona, the Golden Tigers were able to win with a final score of 27-14. It was a close game from the start to the finish as always. Hollidaysburg had the lead for the majority of the game.
Maddox Bainey threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. Gavin Bell caught two touchdowns and Brady Steiner caught one. Hollidaysburgs defense also shut down Altoonas offense.
Bishop McCort-Carrol Beats Central Cambria By One Point
Bishop McCort-Carrol came back to beat Central Cambria with a final score of 28-27. Both teams were below .500 last season, but look to be competitive again with a lot of returning players.
Jon Delia rushed for two touchdowns for McCort-Carrol and Brady Page caught the game winning touchdown. The Crushers had a 21-14 lead at halftime, but the Devils got a 27-21 lead before McCort-Carrols game winning drive.
Penn Cambria Takes Down Richland
The Penn Cambria Panthers had a difficult week one opponent in the Richland Rams, but managed to win 22-8. The two teams returned great teams, but the Panthers defense is very tough this year.
Gavin Harrold ran for two touchdowns and the Panthers defense accounted for two interceptions and a defensive touchdown from Thomas Plunkett. This game was tied 8-8 going into the second quarter, but Penn Cambria put up 14 in the second quarter, which then led to neither team scoring in the second half.
