On Friday night, the Washington Prexies defeated the McGuffey Highlanders by a score of 14-7.
This historic rivalry game usually takes place in the last week of the regular season, but with McGuffey’s move to 3A, the two teams faced off in week 0.
Washington’s first drive of the game ended in seven points when junior quarterback Tristan Reed connected with junior wide receiver Caleb Patton for a touchdown. The pair connected again late in the second quarter, this time on an 85 yard touchdown, which made the score 14-0 in favor of the Prexies.
With five minutes left in the third quarter, senior running back Malachi Ealy found the end zone to put McGuffey on the board. A majority of the yards on the drive came from senior running back Aiden O’Dell, who finished with well over 140 total rushing yards in the game.
McGuffey then got the ball back and was driving down the field as the third quarter came to a close. But, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Washington regained possession by capitalizing on a McGuffey fumble.
Washington’s punter, Tyler Crawford, was able to pin McGuffey deep a few times throughout the game, and he did just that with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter on what would be McGuffey’s final drive of the game.
With 55 seconds left, freshman Ameer Nelson intercepted the McGuffey pass attempt, and Washington was able to kneel the ball out and earn the win.
This was Washington’s second straight year holding McGuffey to seven points.
McGuffey travels to Hiller Field next week for a matchup against the Trinity Hillers, while Washington will travel to Steel Valley.
