Transfer – Wilmington scored 42 first-half points en route to a 56-9 rout of Reynolds Saturday night in Transfer.

For the Greyhounds, it was an excellent rebound following a 38-0 loss against Farrell last week. The ‘Hounds rushed for 312 yards and five touchdowns on the evening.

“After that Farrell game, we worked and reflected,” said Wilmington head coach Brandon Phillian. “The boys had their best week of practice all season long. I thought that carried over, and they played their best game. We have a saying that you’re going to play how you practice. That’s the reality, and I thought they stepped up and turned it up a notch. They took a big step forward and came together as a team. I’m proud to see it paid off on the field tonight.”

Chase Mitcheltree and Freddie Zehetner each scored three touchdowns for Wilmington. Mitcheltree capped a 71-yard drive to begin the contest with a 3-yard run. Mitcheltree and Jamie Miller rushed for 99 yards to lead the Greyhound rushing attack.

The Hounds then put together a 92-yard drive, on which freshman Cael Kettering scored on an 8-yard run. Kettering finished with 68 yards on five carries.

“One of the beauties of the Wing-T offense is you can get all your guys going,” Phillian said. “It’s a difficult offense to defend. So, I thought we diversified our attack tonight. I love seeing so many different guys get involved and have success.”

Following a bad punt snap that resulted in a 28-yard loss, Wesley Vass-Gal threw a 15-yard touchdown to Freddie Zehetner, pushing the lead to 21-0 after a quarter.

Reynolds got on the scoreboard when Gabriel Minjarez scored on a 15-yard run following a 16-play 80-yard drive. Minjarez led the Raiders with 76 yards on 21 carries.

On the ensuing kickoff return, Zehetner raced 83 yards for a touchdown.

Less than three minutes later, Mitcheltree scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run.

Late in the first half, Zehetner made a terrific catch in traffic for a 25-yard touchdown reception from Vass-Gal. Zehetner scored the first three times he touched the ball.

“It was nice to catch a couple of touchdowns tonight,” Zehetner said. “It doesn’t happen too much in the Wing-T. But whenever we do throw, I like to try to capitalize and do what I do. It was a tough one last week. Farrell is a good team. We worked hard in practice, stayed focused, and came to play tonight.”

Freddie Zehetner finished the game with three catches for 64 yards, two touchdowns, and a kickoff return.

“I’ll tell you this: Freddie Zehetner is as selfless of a player as we have on this football team,” said Phillian. “There are times in this Wing-T offense where he is asked to do what he did tonight, going deep and catching footballs. There are also plenty of times when he’s asked to go out there and block. The one thing I love and respect about Freddie is that there’s never any pressure about saying we need to call a pass and put the ball in his hands. It doesn’t matter. He’s a total team player. I couldn’t be prouder to see things work out like this for him tonight.”

Wilmington led 42-6 at halftime.

With the mercy clock in effect in the second half, the Greyhounds scored on both possessions when Mitcheltree scored his third touchdown on a 10-yard run, and Michael Mistretta scored from four yards.

The Raiders got a 22-yard field goal by Gerardo Hernandez as time expired to close the scoring,

Both schools are in action next week: Wilmington hosts Mercer on Friday night, and Reynolds travels to Kennedy Catholic on Saturday.

“This was exactly what we need going forward,” concluded Phillian. “We had a solid game in all three phases. This serves as a springboard for us now that we are coming down the homestretch. We’re a young team with only two seniors. We have a lot of underclassmen playing, and early in the season, we knew there would be some growing pains. Fortunately, now we’re seeing the benefits of those growing pains. We’re starting to come together and play our best football.”
