
Wolfpack Muster A Victory Over District XI Foe Whitehall Friday Night

Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack Started Slow But then Got on a Roll to Defeat the Vising Zephyrs of Whitehall Opening Night.
Wilkes-Barre- The Wolfpack of Wilkes-Barre Area left the Lehigh Valley in the 2023 District XI/2 6A sub-regional disappointed after a 35 point loss to the Nazareth Blue Eagles. The Wolfpack would start off the 2024 campaign facing another Lehigh Valley for in the Whitehall Zephyrs, District XI defending 5A champions, this time Wilkes-Barre left no doubt that they will be a team to reckon with this season as they defeated the visitors 27-10.
After a scoreless first quarter that had the Wolfpack moving the ball well on offense with quick strikes from quarterback Jake Howe and the pounding running of Davon Underwood, but few turnovers thwarted any scoring chances they had early.
A five play 68 yard drive culminated with a 23 yard touchdown pass from Howe to Treyvon Gembitski and a Jaedyn Sanchez PAT made the score 7-0 with 5:09 left in the first half. Howe would find a rhythm through the game as he completed short to medium range missiles to Gembitski and to Jordan Kieselovsky, who caught all 12 passes thrown his way for over 130 yards and screen passes to Underwood over the blitzing Zephyr defense.
Wilkes-Barre Area would find the end zone once again with a 10 yard pass from Howe to Gembitski the PAT this time was blocked leaving the score at 13-0. Howe ended the night completing 26 of 31 passes for the 312 yards and the two scores and no interceptions. The offense did turn the ball over several times during the contest but the Zephyrs could not capitalize do do the ferocious defense of the Wolfpack.

Whitehall had a great chance to cut the lead to one score right before as on the first pay after Wilkes-Barre’s score as quarterback Alsaiah Gross found a streaking Talon Dogmanits down the sideline for a 58 yard completion to the WBA nine, but could only manage a field goal as the horn sounded ending the half at 13-3.
The Zephyrs received the opening second half kickoff and returned it to the Wolfpack 37, but failed to convert the chance into points. The defense would sack Talon Dogmanits for a 12 yard loss on third down to put them out of field goal range.
Davon Underwood would make his way into the end zone at the 3:22 mark of the third quarter pushing the lead to 20-3 and seemingly putting the game out of reach for the visitors. Whitehall only gained 71 yards in rushing on 27 carries and 149 passing yards on 13 of 18 passing. Whitehall had a rotation of players in at the quarterback position including Dogmanits and Gross.

Running back Gene Ardo would score the last of the Wilkes-Barre’s touchdown from three yards out with 11:17 left to go in the contest making the score 27-3. Underwood finished with 75 yards rushing and Ardo with 46 as the Wolfpack amassed nearly 500 yards of offense on the night including 26 first downs to just 6 for Whitehall.
The Zephyrs did manage to cross the goal line once as Gross hit Dogmanits in the front corner end zone to complete the scoring with 7:06 left in the game.
Wilkes-Barre Area (1-0) will be on the road to another District XI school Stoudsburg next Friday night The Mounties (1-0) defeated Wallenpaupack 30-10. Whitehall (0-1) will be back home next Friday to face the Blue Eagles of Nazareth. Nazareth rolled Hazleton 42-7 Friday
