Wolverines celebrate the winning goal line stand
In a game of two halves, the Woodland Hills Wolverines beat the William Penn Bearcats 28-24 in Saturday’s second game of the Chambersburg Peach Bowl Football Showcase. It was a tremendous game that saw the Bearcats come back from a three-touchdown deficit and come within a few feet of winning. But a tired and on the ropes Wolverine defense reached deep down and came up with the vital stop when the game was on the line. With only seconds remaining and the ball at the one-yard line, all-state running back Jaheim White was thrown back for a two-yard loss by 6’5” 267 lb. Kellen McDonough and the rest of the Woody High defense to preserve the hard-fought win.

But how the game progressed to that point is a different story. Woodland Hills capitalized on Elijah Nesby’s electrifying 69-yard run on the first offensive play of the season for Woodland Hills to jump to a 7-0 after Jacob Mroz kicked the PAT. (His first of four PATs.) From there they cruised to a 28-8 halftime lead which could’ve been more had there not been a penalty on Steven Jenkins’ 41-yard pick six.
Next up. York Bearcats and @WoodyHigh and just like that Elijah Nesby goes 69 yards to put the Wolverines up 7-0 with 10:23 still to play in the first pic.twitter.com/Rf8WtkuzFp

Nesby scored two more touchdowns on runs of 9 and 7 yards. The 9-yard score was set up when Angelio Reddix recovered the kickoff that the William Penn defenders let bounce right after Nesby’s 69-yard TD run. The 7-yard TD happened early in the second quarter to give the Wolverines a 21-0 advantage.
The Bearcats broke the ice when David Warde caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Sam Stoner. Then White ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 21-8. Woody High answered when QB Austin Wells capped the first half scoring with a 49-yard jaunt. At that point it was Woodland Hills 28 and William Penn 8.
Frank Keyes of Woodland Hills ran the second half kickoff back for a touchdown, but the score was negated by a penalty. That would happen again in the game. The Wolverines offense shot itself in the foot in all three second half drives as they all ended in turnovers giving the Bearcats the opening they needed.
White broke a horse collar tackle and ran 41 yards to pay dirt in the third quarter, plus he ran in another two-point try to cut the Woody High lead to 28-16. In the fourth stanza Stoner called his own number and scored on a two-yard run. He then hit Warde for two points and suddenly the Bearcats were right there trailing 28-24. Isaiah Grier appeared to give Woodland Hills some breathing room when he ran the subsequent kickoff for a touchdown, but it too was nullified by a penalty. A Woodland Hills fumble set up the late game heroics by their defense as William Penn recovered at the Wolverine 40 with four-minute left.
