Sam Hobbs led his Neumann Goretti Saints team to their first state championship game appearance where they fell just short of hoisting the state title trophy. Sam concluded his senior season with 90 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 3 TDs, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 sacks and a forced fumble. Yesterday after a frustrating and rollercoaster recruiting experience, Sam was able to breathe a sigh of relief as he signed his letter of intent to further his education and collegiate career at California University of Pennsylvania a premiere PSAC program that competes in Division II. One thing Sam stated was the recruiting was stressful just in the fact that colleges preferred experienced players in the transfer portal over building and grooming High School recruits. The transfer portal as well as the extra year of eligibility for college athletes he believes hurt his recruiting process. As for the moment he realized California was for him he believes it was when he was able to tour the academic facilities and program which he says were great and also the history of sending players to the professional ranks. The Coach that really sold him on the university and the program was Coach Turner who showed immense love and Sam felt he was truly wanted and needed into the program. Sam intends to major in sports medicine or business management.
The other schools Sam strongly considered was FCS program University of Albany and fellow PSAC powerhouse West Chester University. Prior to his senior season while camping Sam earned an offer from Syracuse University but as his senior season progressed they stopped their pursuit of him. California got a steal of a young man and player. Sam sends many thanks to his family, close friends, the Nolacking Lifestyle gym, Cyrus Barlee and everyone who supported him including coaches.
