Robinson’s Big Game, Defense Leads Downingtown East to Victory Over Northeast

DOWNINGTOWN: Teams that often find themselves having the most success later on in the season usually are ones that have a dominating ground game and a defense outstanding defensive play. As it turns out that recipe can also win you games early in the season as well. On Saturday night was the case for the Downingtown East Cougars. On the ground, the Cougars rode their workhorse RB Julez Chiron Robinson while their defense was relentless, resulting in a 19-7 season-opening non-league win over the visiting Northeast.
“That’s how we play football big impact plays smashmouth football. We just play hard defense, play as a unit; we know we got Jul in there, we know he’s going to bounce a big run, and we play smashmouth football, and we know if we get turnovers we are eventually going to score on offense.” Shane Keenan said. It was Keenan’s fumble recovery return for a touchdown that iced the victory.
In the game’s opening 24 minutes, the Cougars chipped away at the Vikings offense with Chiron-Robinson amassing 97 of his 220 yards rushing on 22 of his 35 carries. While the Cougars offense was able to find success on the ground in the first half they couldn’t find the end zone, having to settle for a pair of Paul Selden field goals.
Selden’s first field goal, a 23-yarder, gave the Cougars the 3-0 lead with 3:00 to go in the first quarter.

With 9:13 to go in the 2nd quarter, Selden showed off his incredible leg strength, booming a 39-yarder, giving the Cougars the 6-0 halftime lead.

On the second play of the second half Chiron-Robinson exploded through the Vikings’ defense and was off to the races, resulting in a 62-yard touchdown and a 12-0 Cougar lead.
“That was a play we drew in the locker room it was a base play. I trusted my line, my quarterback, the receivers, everybody on the field, and we got the job done.” Chiron Robinson said adding, “We are taught that 3-4 yard carries in the first lead to 50 yard ones in the fourth quarter; we are a ground-and-pound football team.”
The momentum from Chiron Robinson’s touchdown run was shorted lived however, when Amear Miller returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for the Vikings touchdown, making it 12-7 in favor of the Cougars with 11:01 left in the third quarter.
From there, the Cougars defense took over, continuing their relentless pressure on Vikings QB Jayden Boyd, resulting in several sacks and two Vikings turnovers, both of which occurred with under 3 minutes left to play in the game. The first was a backbreaker for the Vikings, driving into Cougars territory and facing a fourth down, Boyd fumbled, and Kennan picked it up and raced untouched for the 62-yard touchdown that gave the Cougars the 19-7 lead.

Madden Miller sealed the victory with an interception in the end zone with under 30 seconds remaining in the game.

The Cougars will now have a bye week this week, which is a cause for concern for Cougars Head Coach Michael Matta, who noted that a team often makes its biggest improvement from Game 1 to Game 2 and that the week off could slow that development. The Cougars return to action September 10 at Perkiomen Valley
