For the first time in 16 years, the Saegertown Panthers have won a District 10 playoff game – and they did so in resounding fashion. The #4 seed Panthers defeated #5 seed Lakeview 53-20 at Meadville’s Barco-Duratz Athletic Complex and they now advance to next Saturday’s game against #1 seed (and 8th ranked team in the state) Wilmington at a site/time TBD.
Saegertown’s offense was led by the triple-headed attack of running backs in #1 Cru Scott, #13 Matthew Shartle and #32 Riley Wilkinson as all 3 would find their way into the end zone for rushing TDs on the night. Scott finished with 3 touchdowns, while Shartle and Wilkinson both finished with 2 TDs apiece, meaning they scored 7 of the 8 touchdowns on the night. The Panther’s Isaac Huya would also score on a rushing TD midway through the 2nd quarter.
For Lakeview, all 3 of their touchdowns came through the air. Sophomore Rem Marsh caught 2 TD passes, while fellow sophomore Hunter Doyle scored on a TD reception late in the 4th quarter.
Saegertown rushed out to a 27-0 lead by the time there was 9:39 left in the second quarter, threatening to put the running clock on Lakeview by halftime. After Cru Scott’s first TD on the night made it 14-0 with 2:04 left in the first quarter, the Panthers would recover a fumble on the very next offensive play by Lakeview, and Shartle would make it 21-0 with just 52 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
However, Lakeview never laid down and quit. Despite wearing a massive knee brace, freshman QB Luke Johnson played on both sides of the ball and bravely stayed in the pocket all game. Lakeview couldn’t establish the run game like Saegertown did, and Johnson kept the Panther’s secondary busy all night. After finishing 1-9 in head coach Blake Reddick’s first season in charge, the Sailors went 5-5 in the regular season and with a core group of underclassmen returning next year, they will surely be in contention for the #5 seed or higher in next year’s playoffs.
#1 Wilmington (8-2) vs #4 Saegertown (8-3)
#2 Mercyhurst Prep (8-2) vs #6 Maplewood (7-4)
