Shikellamy Emerges Victorious In 48-44 Thriller Over Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT – Sometimes in football, there are games where it’s impossible to tell who the winner will be at the end of the game. Sometimes the game is a blowout and it’s easy to know who will emerge victorious, but other times the game goes back and forth until the final whistle. That was the case in the matchup between the Shikellamy Braves and the Williamsport Millionaires, where Shikellamy ultimately prevailed 48-44 in one of the wildest games of the season.
The Millionaires faced some unfortunate circumstances heading into this game. After a very promising 3-0 start, Williamsport received unfortunate news about their star quarterback Tevin Williams. Earlier this week, Williams was hospitalized due to inflammation in his kidneys, which would keep him out for the foreseeable future.
This news about Williams forced the Millionaires into a tough situation, as they didn’t have a true backup quarterback on their roster. It ended up being senior running back Zion Hughes who took the role, and he did about as well as Williamsport could have asked for.
Shikellamy’s opening drive of the game made it all the way down to the Williamsport 3 line yard line. The Braves lined up for a 4th and 2 attempt, but Bobby Felmy’s quarterback keeper came up a yard short at the 2 yard line.
The strong defensive stand set Williamsport up with very little breathing room for their opening drive which ended up being a three and out. Brayden Ungard attempted to punt the ball back to Shikellamy, but the Braves defense got to Ungard and blocked the kick with Kyler Campbell recovering it in the end zone.
The Millionaires responded immediately with a special teams score of their own. On the ensuing kickoff, Za’Mire Hopkins returned the kick from his own 10 yard line straight up the middle untouched for 90 yard touchdown.
After those two special teams touchdowns, the offensive fireworks began. Shikellamy’s next drive spanned 71 yards in just 5 plays that was capped off by a 12 yard touchdown run from Tristan Smith. Smith was one of six different players for Shikellamy that scored a touchdown in the game.
The Millionaires’ second drive of the game saw Zion Hughes get into a rhythm throwing the ball, including a 48 yard connection to Trey Damschroder that set Williamsport up deep in Shikellamy territory. Just a play later, Hughes took it in himself on a draw play for the touchdown.
For what seemed like the entirety of the game, these two teams just traded blows. Whenever one team scored, the other team always seemingly found an answer. After back to back punts from both teams, Shikellamy did exactly that, capping off a 68 yard drive with a 16 yard touchdown run from Bobby Felmy.
Williamsport only needed two minutes and 20 seconds to answer Shikellamy’s score, with Zion Hughes doing it all by himself on the 7 play, 64 yard drive, finishing the series with his second touchdown run of the night. A failed extra point kept Williamsport behind 21-20 late in the first half.
With momentum seemingly on Shikellamy’s side in the waning moments of the first half, the Braves tried to drive down the field one more time, but Felmy’s pass into traffic was intercepted by Jaylen Williams. That pick set up Williamsport in Shikellamy territory, ultimately leading to a 39 yard field goal from Brayden Ungard in the final seconds of the first half.
“I was a little upset after that pick, but I knew I had to step it up and get the job done,” Bobby Felmy said about the halftime interception. “Our team doesn’t ever give up, so we just kept going, kept our heads up if anything bad happened.”
Shikellamy is one of few teams in the state that has two different starting quarterbacks, those being Felmy and Brady Kurtz. Kurtz didn’t get as much involvement in the first half, but he got much more involved in the second half. The first score of the second half came on a passing play, Kurtz hit Thomas Pollock in stride over the middle for a 73 yard catch and run touchdown, putting Shikellamy back ahead 27-23.
“They’re both very good quarterbacks, they compliment each other very well,” Shikellamy head coach Mike Hoover said about their quarterback duo. “They both do different things well, and they both played an amazing game.”
Pollock was another player for Shikellamy that wasn’t as involved in the first half but really stepped it up in the second half. That 73 yard touchdown catch was his first of three touchdowns that he scored in the second half.
“It’s just a combination of my coaches and how the game was going,” Pollock said about his second half production. “I think it’s just my coaches putting their trust in me to go make plays.”
Williamsport continued to find answers for Shikellamy in the second half, driving right back down the field and scoring on a pitch to Trey Damschroder from 10 yards out. The touchdown gave Williamsport a 30-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Pollock found the end zone for a second time, taking a direct snap right up the middle for a 5 yard score that put the Braves up 34-30. With every single touchdown, the momentum seemed to shift one way or another.
Williamsport’s offense stalled on their next drive, reaching their own 43 yard line before facing a 4th and 7 situation. The Millionaires pulled out a trick play, as Brayden Ungard took the snap and immediately ran towards the right sideline, but was ultimately tackled before he could reach the first down marker.
The fourth down stop gave the Braves a ton of momentum, and just 5 plays later, Shikellamy capitalized. On a 3rd and 18 from the Williamsport 35 yard line, Felmy dropped back and hit Maddox Hoover who was left alone in the middle of the field, and Hoover walked into the end zone for the touchdown.
Shikellamy seemed to have found the dagger, as the touchdown gave the Braves a 41-30 lead with just under three and a half minutes left in regulation. Both the home crowd and the home sideline seemed deflated following the score.
That wasn’t going to stop Williamsport from doing their best to keep the game alive. Two big passing plays on their next drive helped the Millionaires find the end zone a minute after Shikellamy’s touchdown. Hughes connected with Damschroder on a beautifully placed pass in the end zone which cut Shikellamy’s lead down to 5.
With 2:17 left and all three timeouts in their pocket, Williamsport opted to try the onside kick, and for a moment it seemed like the Millionaires had recovered it. Unfortunately, Williamsport did not let the ball travel the full 10 yards before touching it, which gave the ball back to Shikellamy.
Three straight run plays by Shikellamy and three straight timeouts by Williamsport set up a 4th and 2 at the Millionaires 41 yard line to potentially end the game. Felmy took the snap and handed the ball off to Thomas Pollock who got met in the backfield by Davahjei Dymeck. Dymeck forced a fumble, allowing Eli Weaver to scoop up the football and sprint 55 yards all the way to the end zone.
The successful two point conversion gave Williamsport a 44-41 lead with 1:48 left in regulation and all of the sudden, the Millionaires had taken control of the momentum in a stunning turn of events.
“We’ve just got to go to the next play,” Pollock said about his thoughts following the fumble. “When something like that happens, you just got to keep your head up and play the next play.”
Despite the touchdown, Shikellamy seemed unphased by the pressure at hand. On a crucial 3rd and 6, Felmy connected with Kyler Campbell on a catch and run that got the Braves inside the 10 yard line, and just a play later, Pollock took a pitch from Kurtz 7 yards into the end zone to go back ahead 48-44 with 43 seconds left.
“I knew we were good,” Felmy said about the games final sequence. “I knew that our defense was going to get a stop, I believed in them, and I know everybody else did.”
Williamsport was able to make it just inside Shikellamy territory, giving them one chance at a hail mary, but the pass ultimately fell to the ground, securing a 48-44 victory for Shikellamy in possibly the craziest game of the year.
“It was a gutsy team effort, I’m not gonna take anything away from [Williamsport], they played lights out football,” coach Hoover said following the win. “There’s not a guy on that sideline that didn’t make a play in this game, and that’s what I’m most proud of, the team effort.”
Shikellamy improves to 3-1 on the season following the win, they will be at home against Jersey Shore next week. Williamsport suffers their first loss of the season, they will fall to 3-1 and face Selinsgrove at home next week.
