The Spring-Ford Rams forced three first half Upper Perkiomen turnovers and ran up and down the field all night in a 42-21 Pioneer Athletic Conference title victory that was not as close as the final score indicated. Phoenix Martin provided the second quarter turning point on a 98-yard explosion through the line, deflating the home team and building an ultimately insurmountable lead.

The Rams got the ball first and chewed up the first five minutes of the game over ten plays. Five of those plays went for ten yards or more. Rowan Harmon pushed ahead for 13 yards on the opening play of the drive and then closed it out with a rumble through the left side for a 5-yard touchdown. At the 7:05 mark, Spring-Ford was up 7-0.

Upper Perkiomen’s first drive ended in disaster. Grayson Sabo dropped back on 2nd & 8 and floated one into traffic and the waiting arms of Victor DeSante. DeSante raced 30 yards back into Indians territory to give the Rams excellent field position. Upper Perk forced a 4th & 1 call and the Rams answered with a Trent Yoder 10-yard gainer into the end zone.

Things went from bad to nearly a whole lot worse for Upper Perk on their next possession. Sabo dropped back and was immediately in the grasp of multiple defenders. He tried to throw the ball away but it was intercepted. However, the officials ruled he was down, resulting in big loss. On 4th & 25, the Indians punted, downing the ball in outstanding fashion at the Spring-Ford 1.

Upper Perk needed a quick stop and Spring-Ford punt to get great field position. None of that happened. Only two plays later, the Rams seized full control of the game when Phoenix Martin accelerated up the middle and trucked his way 98 yards to the house. With a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter, the Rams had another conference title squarely in their sights.

Upper Perk managed only two yards on its next drive and quickly punted. Spring-Ford took over at its own 34 and Kaden Pickersgill and Jackson Wickersham showed off the Rams’ pass game. A 21-yard completion moved the Rams ever closer to another score and Pickersgill finished off the drive with a 1-yard keeper.

With 2:23 left in the half, the scoring was not over. Wickersham punched the ball out, recovering the fumble and nearly housing it. Upper Perkiomen compounded things with a personal foul penalty, moving the ball down to their 8 yard line, where Harmon did the rest.

For good measure, Jack Strzeminski picked off Sabo at the Indians 30. Spring-Ford couldn’t punch it in one more time before half, as a pass into the end zone fell to the turf as time expired. But the damage was more than done and the rest of the game was played in the mercy rule. By halftime, Spring-Ford had outgained Upper Perkiomen 273-64 in total yards.

Grayson Sabo, to his credit and to the credit of the Indians, never quit. He scored three second half touchdowns with his legs to bring the score closer. Phoenix Martin, though, ended all speculation with a 56-yard gallop that made it 42-14 with 6:45 to play.

Both teams continue their season next week in the playoffs. Upper Perkiomen will host Unionville and Spring-Ford will host Quakertown.
