Rockets Hold Their Own Against the Lions

Spring Grove – Last night the Lions of Red Lion traveled to Papermakers Stadium to take on the Spring Grove Rockets in the 7th game of the regular season. The Rockets, celebrating their homecoming football game, were able to hold off the Lions with good defensive performances from both teams. Despite Spring Grove having completed the most passing attempts this season, all of their touchdowns were accounted for by rushing and punt returns. Red Lion will leave Spring Grove with a 27-14 loss, and will move to (1-6) on the season. Spring Grove’s record will move to (5-2), looking to increase their winning record with a game against William Penn next Friday.

Scoring was kicked off on Friday night with a punt return touchdown off a stalled Lion’s drive. Rocket’s senior returner Ben Bubb went 56 yards to the endzone to give them the 7-0 lead with 7:21 left in the 1st quarter.

On the next Red Lion drive, Spring Grove sophomore cornerback Davon Melbourne made an impressive one handed interception to put an end to their drive. He made the quick turn around on offensive, where he was able to help lead a drive down the field, ending with a rushing touchdown by sophomore running back Kade Gibbs. This touchdown helped Spring Grove increase their lead to 14-0 against Red Lion with 4:21 left in the 1st quarter.

The rest of the half would go scoreless in Papermakers Stadium. Both teams made impressive stops on defensive to help stall out the offensive drives. One of the leading defenders in these stops was Rocket’s sophomore defensive tackle Cameron Hershey. Hershey finished the game with 10 individual tackles, and 2 assists.

The 3rd quarter saw the revival of scoring in the stadium. Red Lion added their first points of the game with a rushing touchdown by Hunter Koons. The touchdown helped cut the lead back down, however they still trailed 14-7 against Spring Grove with 3:54 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Rockets were quick to respond to the Lions touchdown, striking back with their own rushing touchdown by sophomore wide receiver Evan Allison. Allison lead the receivers in yards Friday night, completing 6 catches for 73 yards. With his added touchdown, Spring Grove increased their lead to 21-7 against Red Lion with 2:45 left in the 3rd quarter.

Another rushing touchdown was soon to follow for the Rockets, as the next score of the game came from sophomore running back Brody Redding. Redding helped give the Rockets their final points of the game, as they went up 27-7 against the Lions with 6:33 left in the 4th quarter.

With 4:20 left in the 4th quarter, Red Lion was able to find the endzone for their 2nd touchdown of the game. Although the lead was cutdown to 13 points, time expired for the Lions after the final drive was stalled with the help of Rocket’s defensive ends German Madrigal and Tayshawn Fisher. Madrigal finished the night with 5 individual tackles and 5 quarterback hurries, one accounting for a sack. On the other side of the line was Fisher, who finished with 4 individual tackles and 4 assists, with a sack and tackle for loss.

The game ended in a 27-14 win for the Rockets against the Lions. Spring Grove (5-2) now looks towards their final home game of the season next week, against William Penn (3-4), a game with large playoff implications on the line.
