FOLSOM: Last season, the Springfield Cougars won the District 1 5A championship with a dominating run game and defense. Thus far this season, the recipe has been similar, and no surprise, the success has followed. Entering Friday night, the Cougars were 5-0, with a defense that has allowed only 10 points all season. On Friday night, the Cougars faced a difficult test battling fellow unbeaten rival Ridley Green Raiders, whose defense entered Friday only giving up 13 points all season, and were hosting the Cougars in their homecoming game. When it was all set and done, the Cougars passed the test with flying colors,  mauling the Green Raiders and walking away from Phil Marion Field with the 20-0 win and posting their fourth consecutive shutout.

Just how good was the Cougars’ Defense Friday night? Consider this: they held the Green Raiders offense to 89 yards and four first downs, two on the Green Raiders’ opening drive and the next two not until 9:35 was left in the game and the Cougars were up comfortably. The Green Raiders also only reached Cougars territory once and never advanced past the Cougars 38. When asked about his defense performance, one of the Cougars’ leaders, TJ Valetti, said, ““It all comes back to Coach Britt,” referring to the Cougars ‘ head coach and Defensive play caller, Chris Britton. ““He just prepared us so well for the last two weeks that we knew every play that was coming.”

Britton offered praise to his players, the defensive leaders, and his defensive line, saying, “We have captains, and we also have a lot of leaders on this team. Britton also pointed to his defensive line, which consisted of Chase Christy, Zion Culbreth, Tommy Griffin, and  Brady Wainwright, saying, “We are undersized up front, but that is the way it always is on both fronts. Our defensive front is selfless, and they listen. They play sound, and they play smart. There isn’t just one unsung kid on this team. We have a team of unsung kids. Christy came out of nowhere to play really well, and Wainwright came out.

Defensively, the Green Raiders came out with the game plan to try and slow down the Cougars’ rushing game, holding them to 138 yards on the ground, but the Cougars found success through the air with QB John Hopkins completing 8 of 13 passes for 141 yards. Finn Delaney was the top target of the night, hauling 5 passes for 105 yards while also locking down the Green Raiders’ passing game in the secondary.

It was a Hopkins-Delaney connection that set up the Cougars’ first score in the second quarter, with them getting together for a 39-yard gain that put the Cougars at Green Raider 6.

Two plays later, Valetti powered his way in from two yards out, giving the Cougars the 7-0 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Cougars offense came out humming in the third quarter, driving down to the 18 before their drive stalled, resulting in the turnover on downs.

However, the Cougars defense quickly forced the Green Raiders into a three-and-out, and the Cougars offense went back to work, driving 58 yards on seven plays and extending their lead when Hopkins found Shane Kilroy for an 8-yard touchdown, putting the Cougars up 14-0 after 3 quarters of play.

On the ensuing Green Raiders drive, they again went three-and-out, and the Cougars offense went back on the attack, posting a 7-play, 45-yard drive that was capped with Jackson Sheffield’s 6-yard touchdown run.

Next week the Cougars will look to go to 7-0 when they host the 1-6 Radnor Raptors. The Green Raiders (6-1) will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Haverford. Both games kick off next Friday night at 7 pm.
