TJ Valetti scores two in Springfield win

The Springfield Cougars improved to 10-0 and brought home their 11th Central League championship Friday night in a 14-0 win against Strath Haven.

Here were my pregame thoughts

The first drive of the game for Springfield was all ground and pound, with TJ Valetti getting over 5 carries and bringing the Cougars into the red zone. John Hopkins finished off the drive with a dart to Mike Neville for the touchdown, giving Springfield a 7-0 lead over Strath Haven.

After Springfields opening score the next four drives before halftime all resulted in punts and Strath Haven knelt out the clock taking the game to the halftime break with Springfield leading by a score of 7-0 still.

Here were my halftime thoughts

Strath Haven got the ball coming out of the half and went three-and-out, handing the ball off to Landon Barlow on the first two plays and throwing an incomplete pass on the third.

Springfield did not waste any time getting back on the board, driving down the field and drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty that allowed John Hopkins to air it out to TJ Valetti for another Springfield touchdown.

Strath Haven began driving following the Springfield touchdown but Jake Plunkett’s pass deep downfield was intercepted, and Springfield took right back over. The Cougars marched half of the field and got into field goal range for their kicker, Zarel Suarez. On fourth down, the Cougars sent out the Special teams unit for a 23-yard field goal; Suarez’s kick was left short, giving the ball back to Strath Haven.

Strath Haven used all the remaining clock, driving down the field, converting on multiple fourth downs, and taking themselves down into the red zone where they faced yet another fourth down. Haven’s fourth-down try was stopped by Springfield, winning them the football game.

Springfield’s extraordinary defense showed up again, posting their 7th straight shutout.

Here were my thoughts after the game
