Foxburg – The Union/A-C Valley Falcon-Knights head to the District 9 playoffs after a 46-28 win over Sharpsville Thursday night at Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School.
After a disappointing 2-5 start, the Falcon-Knights have rattled off three straight wins and earned their spot in the District 9 A playoffs.
Speaking of rattling things off, Union/A-C Valley fell behind 21-7 in the first half, then scored 39 consecutive points to blow the game open.
“We’ve been in the playoff race for the last three weeks,” said Union/A-C Valley head coach Dan Reed. “We beat a pretty good football team tonight.”
Things didn’t start as planned, as Sharpsville scored on the third snap when Brady Gerlach connected with Tre’Marr Ham-McCullough for a 61-yard touchdown pass.

The Blue Devils scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-7 lead in the opening quarter.
Geno Currie, who entered the contest with 1,137 yards and 18 touchdowns, rushed for a game-high 194 yards and two touchdowns, including 4- and 53-yard runs in the first quarter that capped 57- and 52-yard drives.
Currie ran for 139 yards in the first half, but the Blue Devils offense was stifled for most of the rest of the game.
Parker Bish, who led the Falcon Knights with 107 yards rushing on seven carries, tied the game at seven when he returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown following the Blue Devils’ opening score.
Carson Crissman capped an 8-play, 59-yard drive late in the opening frame with a 5-yard score for Union/ACV.
The Falcon Knights then tied the game early in the second quarter when Noah Yori blocked a punt, and Carson Scott recovered it for a touchdown.
“That blocked punt was huge; I think it really shifted the momentum,” Reed said. “The special teams return, and really I don’t think they stopped us a whole lot on defense. We had a lot of stuff available in our passing game which we never really had to open up tonight.”
Union/A-C Valley then took the lead for good when Stephen Hepler drilled a 36-yard field goal following a 6-play 46-yard drive.
In a classic 2-minute drill, more like a 1-minute drill, the Falcon Knights drove 53 yards in three plays aided by a 15-yard penalty against Sharpsville to take a 31-21 lead into the locker room when Andrew Kifer tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Micah Kindel with 22 seconds to play in the half.

“The last three games we’ve been unbelievable with our 2-minute drives,” said Reed. “We either scored at the end of the game or the half; I mean, we had around 44 seconds left, and Kifer did a great job back in controlling the 2-minute tempo.”
Kifer completed 11 of 15 passes for 155 yards and the score.
Wasting little time putting the game away in the second half, Parker Bish scored on a 6-yard run at the 8:52 mark of the third quarter, then ripped off a 75-yard score to put Union/A-C Valley up 46-21 after three quarters.
“I feel like we’re such a good group of guys,” Bish said. “Our coaches and our leaders did a good job tonight. We always say bend but don’t break. I gotta give all the credit to the line in front of me. I feel like they’re going to continue to get the job done. On that kickoff, I just got the ball, cut left, and it was wide open.”
Sharpsville closed the scoring late when Roman Massey ran for a 75-yard touchdown.
Both schools enter the playoffs next week, with Union/A-C Valley in the District Class A tournament and Sharpsville in the District 10 AA playoffs.
